anyone think that this thread will likely become unbearable over the next 3 or 4 days? every time an above-averagely praised blockbuster comes out, a war starts. and its almost never really as fun as it should be. instead of spirited discussion, its usually just insults and dismissals. the Dark Knight Rises discussion won't be any good until about 3 years from now when snap judgments aren't the foundation of every argument.

i suppose it can't be avoided though.

Just please don't go into a theater and massacre anyone. Fucking nasty shit happened in Colorado.

I didn't come into the movie thinking that it would be better than the Dark Knight or even have somebody even remotely close to being as good as Heath Ledger so I enjoyed the film a good bit. Did seem to drag a little bit at the beginning. Seems like they threw a lot of stuff out there for you, so may need a 2nd viewing to really judge it

After watching all three films in a row in theaters last night, I'll think it's the weakest, but I pretty good film overall. It had some obvious flaws, but I was fine with ignoring them.

You Can't Take it With You is the best Capra film after It's a Wonderful life, just in case anyone was wondering...

OK just saw clearly the worst Nolan Batman film (and one of his worst movies).

Things I liked
1. Bane
2. Anne Hathaway (particularly in the catwoman suit)
3. Some of the visuals

Things I disliked
1. The first 20 minutes
2. The continued speechifying dialog

Things I hated
1. The twist and everything that came after
2. Forced Occupy Wall St. symbolism
3. Forced Reign of Terror symbolism (seriously fuck this nonsense)
4. Authoritarian circle jerking

Things I despised
1. Nolan bringing up all this topical and philosophical ideasand shoehorning it in only to throw it all through a woodchipper and let the parts fall where they may.

This is almost Hollywood at its worst (I won't say worst because Michael Bay's most soulless shit, Roland Emmerich's shit, and Adam Sandler movies and things of that ilk are still worse) but it is certainly Hollywood with any pretenses to seriousness at its worst.

Edit: I should clarify my last statement. What I mean by it is not to say the movie itself is Hollywood at its worst but this attempt to shoehorn in these ideas without understanding why or what you're doing is a terrible thing to do.

Everything I'm hearing--both here and elsewhere, both positive and negative--has me convinced that it is precisely my least favorite type of film: the poorly constructed self-serious Blockbuster. I'm either waiting until someone else buys me a ticket or it goes to the dollar theater.

Am I the only one who likes Batman Begins more than Dark Knight?

No I think I might like it more as well. I didn't at first but I think it holds up the best.

I think I'll see it just for Bane. I am always entertained by these likeable so-evil-they're-cool villains in this franchise. I like watching how they act with their bodies (and how Nolan shoots them), their rhythm in their dialog, the pauses, all those actorly nuances, which judging from my memory of the trailers that have come out, Hardy is another one to have an entertaining way of presenting himself.

So when someone asks me why I'm going to see it, I'll tell them: It's the bane, it really is. (ohshii)

Fuck that nonsense.

But I can agree with you that Nolan is by far the most pretentious filmmaker in contemporary hollywood and his influence will be more negative than positive and anyone who disagrees is objectively wrong, I would also like to add that his fans are worse than Nazis, no hyperbole, irrefutable.

I am probably the only one who thinks this, but I prefer Bane (Hardy) to Joker (Ledger). I liked his character a lot more than the joker; ill give it more viewings over the next few weeks at work, but I think I will still end up liking him more than the joker.

Crx, What about the first 20 minutes? Was it Carcetti?

Things I liked : How hopeless it felt; most of the movie was not a superhero movie; Bane; Hathaway; Oldman (his character became a lot more complex and involved than in the previous films, and for me that was a good thing; I like Gordon from the novels, so this was a plus); Caine - more than just the "how are you doing, Mr.Wayne?" and actually showing his care for the character; Det. Blake; Wire cameos; less cringe worthy lines; batmans voice wasn't absolutely painstaking; Bane's voice

Things I disliked: The score at times was a bit much; the twist like ending; Too many characters added - they should have introduced a few of them in the previous two films if they wanted the trilogy to connect the way it did; got a bit slow about 3/4s through the film.

Pete, A lot of your criticism is a problem with the source material - a lot of the batman series deals with income inequality, so I don't think its as valid to have villains that spawn from that conflict. And what do you mean throw it through a woodchipper? You mean the people that were purposing these ideas losing in the end?
