It actually is very bizarre that not one Hitchcock film is represented.

If this is the case because my and George's intense dislike of his films has intimidated others into not including them on their lists, then that is bad.

If this is the case because my and George's intense dislike of his films has freed others to admit to themselves that they don't actually like these films which just about every other film publication in history (other than the books of Ray Carney) makes them feel like they should like, then that it good.

I've only seen a few Hitchcock films and not in several years, so his lack of inclusion on my list is due to, if nothing else, my not having gotten around to him yet. I think I had Psycho not too far below the 50th spot, so it nearly made it on. I remember liking Rear Window a lot when I saw it, but it's been too long to adequately rate it amongst other favorite films.

I liked Rear Window and North By Northwest when I watched them, but I remember Psycho not really doing anything for me. All the good parts had been spoiled through parody long before I saw it.

well i've only seen Psycho and everytime i think of it, it gets more and more ridiculous. at this point, my memory has warped it in to some awful cheesy B movie. don't know that it really was that ridiculous. but i don't really want to watch it again either.

I didn't even know there was that much Hitchcock hate here, but I never liked him. I love campy and overblown films being a horror fan, but he just seems a to get do bloated and campy things with no sense of tongue-in-cheek or fun whatsoever and gets it passed off as some kind of incredibly layered high art. His films to me always seem so stuffy and mechanical.

Still think North By Northwest was the boringest, most robotic and least fun film I've ever seen.

The fact most critics despise horror, yet love Psycho because Hitchcock made it (and the same with the Shining and Alien having big name non-horror directors) always really irks me, they should at the very least try to hide their snobbery.

There was immediate praise for Alien when it came out and Ridley Scott wssnt known that much at all at the time.

True, but there's always praise for horror films on their release by general media, I'm talking about the film school/Sight & Sound etc. brand of critics.

Hitchcock is one of my cinematic heroes, I'da included a lot of his work had I made a list.

don't do silent films, only like 3 people would do one.

I'd do another one of these or like 00's or something

just to clarify, i don't really have much specifically against hitchcock or his movies per se (they're no better or worse than 99% of the stuff out there, even probably better than most of it), but i do have something against a culture where his movies are regarded as defining classics and lauded as among the greatest masterpieces ever... needless to say, i regard it a very sick culture which i desire no part of...

ha... and despite my criticism, i'll admit that the only time i saw "north by northwest" with my exgirlfriend was probably one of the few actual "fun" movie experiences i've had... i put it on par with my favorite arnie flicks and such as brainless movie fun...

next time i'll boycott these things if you don't contribute, jacques! pretty sure i'm not the only one who was looking forward to seeing your list and writeups... (-:

fuck I had a whole post written but forgot to click submit and now everything i wanted to say seems kinda unnecessary.

to summarise:
- I, like Jake, consider Hitchcock as one of the very finest directors, he's a personal cinematic hero, and so I can agree with all the film history books. He also has a very cinematic sense of humour, often very perverse and morbid, which I love.
Having said that, I will also say that it must suck huge amounts of ass for Dreww or George who don't like his films to have to deal with this over and over, because he is one of the most frequently mentioned directors in all dem books.

- Psycho is overrated (love it but it's not even in my top 10 Hitchcock)

- Perhaps an inventory of favourite silent movies is a bad idea. But I think we should have some kind of silent film awareness thread that people would actually post in and discover some real shit.
