Spoilers:
I'm glad that they were just red herrings, because I would've been severely disappointed if it did turn out to be another 'ganger. It'll be interesting to see what the Doctor does now that he's stepping back into the shadows.
It wouldn't have been "another" 'ganger, though, it would be the same one. There's actually dialogue in the episode where he melts where the Doctor tells him that he could survive it if his theories about (scientific mumbo jumbo) are correct. And the Doctor flat-out asks the 'ganger Doctor about being invited to his death. Which I thought was a huge clue, but I guess it was a red herring. And I suppose I should have expected that, since Moffat wouldn't reveal something like that right in the dialogue of a mid-season episode, but it was spoken
so fast and no one that I know of noticed it or commented on it! Did any of you notice it?

Maybe there will be a genuine thread towards the Doctor over these specials or next season?
What do you mean? It looks like Moffat is going for a multi-season mega arc with his tenure. Who knows how long this will go. We still don't know the who, how and why of the TARDIS blowing up at the end of season five!

Matt Smith's Doctor is practically omnipotent. Anyone else feel that it's also different in terms of tone due to the change in cinematography?
The cinematography, the approach of Moffat and his directors, the writing, the acting, it all contributes to a different tone from the RTD/David Tennant years. And, yeah, the Matt Smith Doctor does seem omnipotent. Even when he was dying from River Song's poison kiss, he still seemed like he knew he'd survive. And the way he escapes the Pandorica makes him unbeatable.
