There are shitloads of absolutely hilarious situations throughout the series, it's damn near impossible for me not to laugh at least once every episode. That's another thing I love about Breaking Bad, too, but I don't think The Wire has any less humour compared to that show, unlike what many people have been implying over the years. Just because The Wire doesn't have a Bryan Cranston or a Bob Odenkirk doesn't make it any less hilarious.

I mean, it's just incredible how much of a comic relief Bunk and Jimmy are, while still having so much emotional weight.

Oh yes, absolutely. The Wire is funnier than most sitcoms. I just picked out season 5 as a black comedy in particular just because the main storyline is so ridiculous, which isn't something that really occurs with the other seasons.

I just crack up thinking about Bunk arguing with Jimmy, Jimmy's shifty attempts to keep the case going with his superiors, him kidnapping the bum, and especially, when he phones Templeton pretending to be the killer.

Breaking Bad was, early on at least, explicitly a black comedy.

Here's a good lecture by David Simon called "The End of the American Century and the Triumph of Capital Over Labor"
