well you should just tackle un chien andalou since it's the shortest and kind of essential for any movie fan to see. But yeah I started with Viridiana and I loved it. It is strange with him tho as his career is split in so many ways, but Viridiana seems the most accessible in my eyes. If you really want to be indie tho, watch The Young One, which is also in English, but it's one of my favs of his

Watched un chien andalou. Didn't realize it was that short. I didn't lol at any point but I was amused through most of it. I liked how it was surreal.

I'll check out viridiana in the near future.

i thought Viridiana was very lame... my recommendation for Bunuel would be Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

So I'm hardcore crushing on Eric Rohmer lately. Not only an astonishing writer who constantly uses his characters' pretension against them even as he conveys sympathy in his harshest critiques, but also a hella underrated director. His Moral Tales make POV shots even of objective camerawork, and his approach to shot/reverse shot works on the rhythm of what's being said, not who's saying it. And The Green Ray speaks so truthfully to my own social anxieties and maladjustment it almost hurts to talk about it.
