personally i think we'd be better off making a pt kind of list but only with cool people

I'm down for that, but I think we should all make a composite list for who we think is the greatest, not our favorites. Like I'm not too big on Potemkin, but Eisenstein would most likely be in my top ten.

I think Chapman should be number 1, he covers all criteria, he was one of the earliest, making influence an easy one, that's not without having to think. He's iconic, whenever you see a picture of him, you immediately think "Hitler!". He has critical acclaim (everyone but me loves him). I don't see why not.

As for the rest of the list, I'm a bit fuzzy. I think Griffith should be top 5, but not sure about Eisenstein.

FMJ and Shining are great imo, but far from masterpieces. but at the same time, most of the great directors have at least 4 films that people could point to and say "thats a masterpiece". that doesnt mean Kubrick is the absolute best. just that he's one of them. his films leave me a little cold at times, but otherwise i agree those first three are top tier films.

A common criticism made from all the Confused Matthews of the world who have completely missed the point of Kubrick's method of filmmaking.

You can get the point and still disagree with it.

Precisely, same goes for minimalist music for example.
You can get into a trance yet find it boring as fuck.

Those "alternative" recommendations are godawful. Maybe we could put a film to start with for somebody who has never seen a film by the director in question. Not his greatest all-time masterpiece, nor some obscure unfinished really early unknown film.

Yeah that is something that definitely needs to be taken into account on this list.

I think Leone did a really good job with this list. I now think in order to improve it we should do something with the list like Snoogans said and try to revise it from there.

We should use the recommended first watches in each Director's favorite director's thread on here.

Could we expand the list out to 150? Also, shouldn't Wajda place higher on the list?

Only saw A Generation and Canal (which was not quite as good as A Generation though) and soon I'll be watching Ashes nd Diamonds. I like Wajda a lot, and think he should definitely be considered for placement.
