These tiers are really helpful. I'm glad they weren't taken away like on the favourite artists forum.

Donald Richie died. I adored "The Films of Akira Kurosawa" when I was getting into films seriously.

I had not known, but he was named as one of the 5 people for the "Asian of the Century", similar to times 100 greatest, along with Gandhi, Deng Xiaoping, and scientist Charles Kao and Economist Akio Morita.

One of the things that they mention why he was picked is one of my favorite things about him : He blended elements from both Western societies (Europe, USA) as well with his own Japanese heritage. I do love Ozu, but at times I do find that he was fighting a battle that he could not win, and should not be fighting in the first place - modernization. The modernization of Japan during the post-war period was a time of great artistic output: Ozu and Mitzoguchi commenting on the hurried movement towards large industrialization and modernization that the country had taken in the past 50 years or so, and increasing ever more with the end of WW2; and Kurosawa and the 60's Japanese New wave momvement that was embracing both japanese cultures, as well as accepting others outside their own.

Had the chance to see High & Low in 35. Whoa. All I can say is I was way too young to appreciate that when I first watched it. Maybe his best?

Of all directors, choosing a favourite Kurosawa is the most painful.
