I need to see that a second time. And preferably a third and fourth.

Fucking TCM, play it more than once a year. God I would like nothing more than a Kuro boxset to come out...

if anyone's curious here are a few Kurosawa productions not in his official filmography (and with the exception of the last, shouldn't be)

1941 Uma
His first direction credit, a co-direction with his friend and mentor Kajiro Yamamoto. It is unknown how much of it he directed - if anything major at all - and it has been lost anyway. Anyway, we don't list the films that other filmmakers made essentially as 2nd Unit directors

1946 Those Who Make Tomorrow
Kurosawa co-directed this film with Hideo Sekigawa and Kajiro Yamamoto after being essentially forced to by Toho. He hated the film and took it out of his filmography listing and he (at the insistence of his friend Yamamoto) asked not to be listed in the credits, as such we don't know how much creative impact he had on the film, he though he was definitely one of the three directors

1999 After the Rain
Kurosawa wrote and was planning on directing the film if he did not become bedridden in 1995. He asked his friend Takashi Koizumi to direct it in his stead. Pretty much everything is as Kurosawa would've wanted, even though he himself did not direct it. This would be the least likely of these four films to be added since he did not actually direct a single second of the film

2002 The Sea is Watching
A script of his made by another filmmaker. I'm guessing if both had lived to see its production, the movie that would have reunited Mifune and Kurosawa one more time (given that by then they would have had enough time to fully renew their friendship after good-faith meetings at funerals and award ceremonies in the early 90's). Oh the movie? Its as much of a Kurosawa directed movie as a film written by a director is of that director's style, so not particularly much. In the most recent version of The Films of Akira Kurosawa, Donald Ritchie goes into how Kurosawa basically spent his last few months into finishing the film's screenplay.

2010 Gendai no Noh
This is probably the most likely of these to be added to his filmography. Kurosawa started filming this documentary(!) about Noh theatre while waiting for Ran to find funding and abandoned it half-complete once it found funding from Serge Silberman. It apparently will be finished at the end of the year, with all of Kurosawa's nearly 1 hour of footage included.

Ran is up on Youtube for free and legally (courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment). Don't know the quality of the subtitles (probably the same as on the new Blu-Ray/the one that's on IFC every day) here if you really want to watch it in what I assume isn't good quality.

For those in the US, its Hulu for the next 7 days.

"The URL contained a malformed video ID."

so i couldn't find the link, but really, "ran" would be the worst kurosawa movie to watch on youtube... it's like "lawrence of arabia", in that it's an epic that should be watched on a big screen and it should be a high quality video

as I mentioned, one can just wait until it comes on IFC again, because they seem to play it like twice a week, but the link's up there for anyone who cares.
