Seriously though, I have faith that this may turn out to be a good kids film (if only because of the director), but I really wish Spielberg didn't jump on this computer rendered bandwagon. It's bad enough that Zemeckis won't fucking give it up already.

Saw an advance screening for Tintin today. It's a film almost totally devoid of humanity (and not because of the mocap, which was actually pretty great). However, it is a nonstop piece of wonderment, the first time Spielberg has found any real, outright joyousness in his work since the brachiosaur reveal in Jurassic Park. Basically, put the first three Indy movies in a blender, hit purée, and serve with a side of Pirates of the Caribbean. It's a nonstop climax of a movie, and the animation is unimpeachable. Spielberg has one of the more active cameras, but here he has no impediments, and watching him play in his sandbox is glorious. One of my favorites of the year, actually, but then I'm a sucker for gifted directors' stylistic exercises (After Hours and Bringing Out the Dead are top five Scorsese for me).

Hey, great that you enjoyed it! Definitely one of the year's highlights for me. Also, I don't know if this means anything to anyone, but I thought was totally awesome that pretty every Belgian I know personally who has seen Tintin absolutely loved it. This unanimous positive response to it made me feel really good about being a Belgian for the first time in a long long time.

Huh, didn't know you were a Belgian.

What Sanjuro said about the film is pretty accurate for me too. There's nothing in the story or the characters on which to attach emotion, but it's a fun experience. There are some great sequences in it, especially one near the end. It does sort of march from one climactic action scene to another which is fine, but at the end of it I personally was rather worn out. Add to that my original detachment and you get a pretty bad aftertaste of the whole film.

Sounds like I will be avoiding this. The constant climax is my least favorite Hollywood trope.

oh shit i was just telling my friend that I hope Spielberg makes another sci fi movie after Lincoln because he's already made 3 great ones just in the last decade, with 2 of them masterworks (MR and AI). I haven't seen War Horse, but these period pieces just arent cuttin it for him or Ridley anymore. Glad they're moving on.

Don't believe the War Horse hate. It's got a lot of great stuff going for it. As a wholoe, it's far from a masterpiece but you, as a bona fide John Ford fan (the way it fucking should be for all), will feast upon the first and last chapters of this film.

I heard about that a while ago. So stoked! I guess he's been walking around as Abraham Lincoln for months now.
