trying to keep new threads limited so that it doesnt become cluttered. if the new threads could fall in to 2 categories it'd be nice, those 2 being polls or threads for actresses/actors (see the Daniel Day Lewis thread for example). obviously this isnt a strict rule, just a general one to try so that we dont clutter things up with threads that have 2 or 3 posts in them. if you make a thread and it catches on, im not gonna delete it or something. but if its a small discussion you want to start, bring it here instead.

I think James Stewart is the greatest actor of all time, with Bogart second and Brando third.

i'd be interested in hearing why. Bogart is solid at what he does, but in my opinion has serious limitations. but film acting historically is seen to have had a huge leap forward in the mid 50s as guys like Brando, Dean, and Newman came into the picture with Stanislavsky ideas from the Actor's Studio. in terms of influence, this is where American film acting has been ever since. Stewart is my favorite actor from the pre-Brando days for sure. he just lays everything on the line as an actor, never afraid to be vulnerable or look foolish or look worn down and he makes you truly believe in the sincerity of his characters. Bogart plays "cool" and "down on his luck" equally with ease, but I've never really seen him expand. idk though, i might not have seen the right stuff.

That top three was more opinion than anything else. He's just one of my faves. After seeing Casablanca I had to watch more films that he starred in. He is limited though, I agree with you on that.

keep in mind that these tiers that are going up are based on the performance, not the movie as a whole. thats why LA Confidential, for example, is not red in the Russell Crowe thread even though its arguably the best movie he's ever been in.

really liking Sam Rockwell and Chris Cooper these days. I'd probably place them high on my own personal list.

I think the actor threads should have some quotes, like the director threads.

You would. I mean it's cool in the sense that you'll see their pictures and go "oh hey! it's that guy!", but the substance of the article is bullshit.
