We haven't had a new thread here in a while. The title says it all. Performances are supposed to be ranked based on initial and lasting acclaim, with a bit of popularity and cultural impact thrown in. And influence for older ones. These lists are supposed to be from US/UK point of view, with some consideration given to European and Asian awards. Just a rough draft for last three years for now (and one of these lists is rather bad):

2013

1. Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodrof - Dallas Buyers Club
2. Cate Blanchett as Jeanette "Jasmine" Francis - Blue Jasmine
3. Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort - The Wolf of Wall Street
4. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup - 12 Years a Slave
5. Christian Bale as Irving Rosenfeld - American Hustle
6. Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly - Her
7. Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone - Gravity
8. Robert Redford as Our Man - All Is Lost
9. Adele Exarchopoulos as Adele - Blue Is the Warmest Color
10. Bruce Dern as Woody Grant - Nebraska

2012

1. Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln - Lincoln
2. Joaquin Phoenix as Freddie Quell - The Master
3. Denzel Washington as William "Whip" Whitaker - The Flight
4. Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Shultz - Django Unchained
5. Phillip Seymour-Hoffmann as Lancaster Dodd - The Master
6. Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany Maxwell - Silver Linings Playbook
7. Jessica Chastain as Maya - Zero Dark Thirty
8. Emmanuel Riva as Anne Lauret - Amour
9. Mads Mikkelsen as Lucas - The Hunt
10. Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens - Lincoln

2011

1. Jean Dujardan as George Valentin - The Artist
2. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher - The Iron Lady
3. George Clooney as Matt King - The Descendents
4. Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe - My Week with Marilyn
5. Albert Brooks as Barney Ross - Drive
6. Christopher Plummer as Hal Fields - Beginners
7. Michael Fassbender as Brandon Sullivan - Sham
8. Gary Oldman as George Smiley - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
9. Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark - The Help
10. Tilda Swinton as Eva Khatchadourian - We Need to Talk About Kevin

Feel free to critique

Excellent idea, Timmy!
I have only one suggestion: Separate actors and actresses.

I prefer the idea of combining. Always keeping them separated is a bit silly.

Here is some other performances of 2013 worth mentioning or considering for top ten:
Lupita Nyong'o as Patsey – 12 Years a Slave
Michael Fassbender as Edwin Epps – 12 Years a Slave
Judi Dench as Philomena Lee – Philomena
Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips - Captain Phillips
Barkhad Abdi as Abduwali Muse – Captain Phillips
Jared Leto as Rayon - Dallas Buyers Club
Lea Seydoux as Emma - Blue is The Warmest Color
Toni Servillo as Jep Gambardella - The Great Beauty
Oscar Isaac as Llewyn Davis - Inside Llewyn Davis

Also some part of me wants to switch Joaquin Phoenix and Christian Bale but that's probably personal bias creeping in. Not too sure about Leo against Chiwetel as well but I suspect I got it right.

For now I agree with Sherick. I don't particulary want to separate this list into two different ones. Bruno, feel free to post male or female only list for that year or previous years. I will take them into consideration, that's for sure.

Made one for another year, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Perharps too biased toward Academy awards and toward America.

Michelle Williams played Marilyn in My Week With Marilyn, not Michelle Philips. I don't even know who that is.

My bad, I had a brain fart or something. But Michelle Phillips does exist. She was a member of The Mamas & the Papas.

I wouldn't put Dujardin in the top 4. Regardless of that, Oldman should be #1.

my recommendation is to make the lists specifically for US/UK markets. since that's where your exposure/knowledge is. there's nothing wrong with having specificity for the lists. there is no law that you have to have world lists. you live in the US, you experience english-speaking culture and arts, you have knowledge and expertise of it.

IF you wanted to make these lists for the world over, you have to actually go for it. you can't compromise. it can't be 6 american roles and a token french, spanish, and two asian performances thrown in. the film world is so large, you would have years where you'd only maybe have 1 or 2 english-speaking roles on the list. they would be great lists. but a compromised list- i.e. one that seeks to be a world list but ends up being 60% US/UK anyway- does nothing but belittle your subject. there is nothing wrong with specifying your list in order to better use the knowledge you already have. and letting someone with knowledge of European film, or Asian film, or whatever to do those lists.

as for the other point... YES, you are way too bias towards the Oscars. sorry, but its true.

for a starting point with awards, check out all these for each year: Oscars, BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globes, Independent Spirit, British Independent Film Awards, and the various critics awards. you'll get a better idea overall of the acclaimed performances that year. but don't stop there. you have to go outside of the awards season. for example, 2011 was Gosling's year, but it was Drive that got him the praise, while The Ides of March was simply the safer choice for the Globes to recognize. its happened that way before to, where actors get recognition for a year of great work with whatever happened to be the easier sell to awards voters.

for example, Philip Seymour Hoffman get a supporting actor nomination in 2007 for Charlie Wilson's War, which was a good performance, but it was on the strength of his performances in The Savages and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. but it was more difficult to campaign for him to get a Best Actor nod, so they campaigned for the Supporting Actor nod instead, knowing the overall buzz of the three films would help people want to recognize him for at least one of them and that was the easiest one. if you were making a list of greatest PSH performances, Charlie Wilson's War would be the one with the Oscar nomination, even though it was really the third best performance of his that year.

I will have to rethink anything I have done up to this point. These lists probably should look rather different from what they are now. Not sure what direction and what approach to take though. I am not a fan of separating acting performances lists by language cause it feels somewhat arbitrary but we will probably be able to get better lists by doing so. Are we okay with these lists being purely english speaking ones? Or should we aim for the worldwide scale?

i hate to be a bummer and i know you are a huge Oldman fan (as am I), but he wasn't even close to being the number 1 most acclaimed performance that year. it was a symbolic Oscar nomination, for sure. but if you look at awards season across the board, he's not even top 10 most nominated/awarded.

here's a top 50+ in terms of the awards season. Wins got more weight than nominations, and i weighted the bigger awards just slightly when it was close. this is not exact or scientific, just an overall looks at the performances that got the most recognition. and believe me, the source list was pretty exhaustive. i looked at every critics awards in addition to every major industry award. about 30ish different awards in total.
