The version of Heartbreaker on HTWWW has gotta be in his top 5 guitar performances ever. It's spectacular.

Jimmy really wasn't THAT much sloppier than Hendrix or Blackmore.

Besides, this is ROCK & ROLL! If you want utter flawless technique, listen to jazz.

*Not that there's anything wrong with jazz*

I'm a Page fan, but I find that more often than not, his studio performances eclipse most live versions because his melodic sensibilities came out better in the more controlled environment of the studio. With Hendrix and Blackmore, their live performances are what I always return to because they improve on whatever they recorded in the studio.

I have already had that discussion with SanTropez many times, and I've yet to be convinced. Jimmy Page was a better studio musician than he was a live musician.

I'd have to side with San Tropez and say that I also prefer Jimmy in a live setting.

Nothing he did in the studio can even dream of topping No Quarter from TSRtS.
Or Heartbreaker from HtWWW.

In terms of consistency, I agree perhaps. But his live peaks are quite high, I put him in the same bracket as Hendrix there, though not as high.

Usually he was pretty choppy live, but that No Quarter was one particular moment where he was really ON. That tone is so delicious, and the notes just flow out of him like seamlessly.

Zephead, I'm assuming you've heard the solo in Thank You from the BBC Sessions?

One of his best live solos. And this is an exceptionally good cover. By the way, I've listened to all Zep studio albums + live albums + a plethora of bootlegs.

London Calling? How is "London Calling" even a decent guitar performance besides the 3 sec solo?
