Paul Gilbert in the first place...the only technical thing I find impressive about him is, well, picking, right? I'd say that Vai has way much more control of the instrument, and Impelliteri or Petrucci are faster with alternate picking...I may be wrong though, but PG in the first place, I don't see why, he's maybe sounding more accurate than anyone, but he's def. not the most technical guitarist out there?

You're not entirely incorrect, but Gilbert was chosen because he's someone who's shown immense chops both studio and live since the mid-'80s, and who still maintains a high level of skill. Since this list is still unfinished, and may never be finished due to the nature of the list, Gilbert is nice to keep at #1 for now. If someone can present a case for someone else, then it is quite possible that Gilbert is dethroned in the future.

but it's kind of a stretch to call vai metal, isn't it? if we go that far, why not include govan, who imo tops both gilbert and vai.

Wow the thread is almost dead!

If its between adding Guthrie or removing Vai, my vote would probably go with removing Vai.

Doesn't mean I have to like the idea of him taking over, or giving him permission to. I wouldn't mind someone like Shuure taking over, but I don't think he's interested.

So a dormant list where no progress is being made is better than letting someone trying to do something with it ? You guys would be giving the guy your opinions too I guess ..... but I guess it is a dead thread, so be it....

Surprised to see Todd Duane below Paul Gilbert. Duane's like a turbo boosted version of Gilbert, plus he uses hybrid picking a lot for added variety in licks.

Anyone listened to MAB's OFR solo in the Nitro album, or Time Traveler? Those are a lot more technical than Speed Kills.

Kiko Loureiro and Impellitteri could be bumped up a bit, Impellitteri may not be the cleanest alternate picker around but try any of his songs and they're a lot harder than Gilbert's. Same goes for Loureiro, he's not the cleanest but has difficult phrasing.
