I don't really see the point of trying to name the most tasteful guitarists. The way I see it, you are either tasteful or you're not.

Naw, I don't even think it's about that. It's all about what you play over each song. Like, Yngwie ripping it up on "Little Savage", that's tasteful because it totally fits the song. The same playing would not work on "Something" by The Beatles, but George Harrison would sound like crap on "Little Savage".

Then again, a guitar performance can be totally over the top and still work perfectly, but I wouldn't necessarily dub it 'tasteful'. Silly word, I guess, kinda like 'emotional'. It's more of an abstract term rather than a clear musical definition.

the live recordings have their moments. the studio album i didnt care for, though i was never big on schmoltrane

i think my first post on ddd was about santana/mclaughlin... i think their live recordings are amazing. it's very rare, but rv is wrong.

I'm primarily talking about the studio album; I wasn't even aware of any live recordings. I think they are fantastic together, the level of playing on the album is unreal.

Sure thing. Could I get the name of the live album? Out of curiosity and my wanting to possibly explore McLaughlin's discography more, what would you all cite as his best album performance?

Yes I did mean that. I actually appreciate Inner Mounting Flame more as an ensemble performance that just McLaughlin, though he's great on it.
