Yeah, we have a metal list, but we don't have a non-metal list. If we don't because too many different styles, we can split it into sections such as acoustic, slide, rhythm, or we could do it on style, like prog, southern, classic, etc. This list is Skill, influence and popularity has no impact on rankings

But for now, ideas and/or names?

Criteria ideas so far: speed, precision, complexity, genre blending, use/mastery of multiple techniques (speed picking, finger picking, hybrid picking, slide, tapping, etc.), multi genre talent/versatility, mutli instrumental (guitar) talent (classical, acoustic, electric, ukulele, whatever else you feel is necessary)

1. Guthrie Govan

danny gatton
steve morse
eric johnson
phil keaggy
shawn lane
steve lukather
john jorgenson
tommy emmanuel (if you count his rock background as significant enough)
jan akkerman
vai, satch, yngwie, friedman, becker, moore
steve hackett and howe
neal schon, frank marino
gilbert, macalpine, petrucci, buckethead, timmons
ray gomez, carl verheyen, michael landau
kotzen, skolnick, lynch, stevens
thal, eklundh, romeo
troiano, ollie halsall
lee, garsed, helmerich, firkins, poland, greg howe, campbell
batio, stump, cooley, impelliteri
and i can think of a few more guys who aren't on the list

and we all know about blackmore, hendrix, beck, fripp, schuldiner, et al

He was in Asia with Steve Howe, right? Never knew who played which songs...so, okay, curiosity, is he more skilled than Steve Howe? And which Asia songs did he play?

Hmm, OK. It is actually a great idea, but could you explain a little more the criteria? I mean, it was easier with the Metal because you know, metal is about speed and shred, but now, what is it about? Is about who's fast? Is about who use more teoric things? Is about versatility with genres? Sorry if it sounds stupid, but I'd like more explanation, or at least some examples.

For now on, I'm gonna say Lawson Rollins, that man got skills and I think he's pretty much what you're talking about.

Guthrie is probably the most skilled guitarist in the world right now, regardless of genre.

I never said I did. That's why I said Govan is "probably" the most-skilled guitarist in the world right now, and not "It is a proven fact that no guitarist living does not exceed Govan's skill."

And what are your basis to say that Govan is "probably" the most skilled guitarist in the world, regardless of genre?

You're mentally deficient, that's my basis for saying it.
