I am obsessed with Akkerman. I have pretty well every solo and Focus release and am continually buying up everything else he has played on.

Luckily I have seen him quite a few times both solo acoustic and with a band. He says that he finds it diffcult to switch regularly from the electric to the acoustic/lute work and that he would ideally need 6 months solid acoustic playing to get back to the standards he himself would require for a tour (but he never does) although he has said that he will stop playing the electric at 70 and concentrate on his classical/acoustic playing.

Two of my faves

This is him at 64 - Still rocks harder and faster than most guys half his age

Version of 'Classical Gas' from his live Acoustic album 'Passion'

I loved that 1st clip Seeker, much thanks....i havent heard much, but whatever i hear seems to be of the highest quality....

I've noticed this very strange thing about Akkerman ...his guitar sound is always very faint and low....right from the Hocus Pocus clip to the video i saw, his guitar is always softer than the other instruments, so its sometimes hard to pick it out...i wonder why cause most guitarists max out their guitars drowning all other sounds, and here is this man who literally stays in the background even though he is so incredible.....confusing....

I suspect thats as much to do with the recording and YT quality than actual performance. That Hocus Pocus clip was from a TV broadcast in 1973. Jan has always preferred Gibsons because of their tone and sustain, and he hates Fenders with a vengeance. However, in later years, I have had a problem with his tone, especially on his 72 Black LP custom. Its really clean and tinny to my ear, but he seems to like it. (Its also very unforgiving when he makes a mistake)

Anyway, If you would like some material then send me a message !

Framus made a Jan Akkerman guitar that's very stylish, even though Jan himself preferred the Gibsons over his signature model.

Rik Emmett actually used the Akkerman model more than the guy it was made for.

That was a fine looking axe. Jan also had a 'copy' of the Framus made some years later by Catalyst, called the Firenze. He has occaionally used an SG and also is a promoter for the Langcaster (which is just about the best looking guitar around)

Here is a short clip Jan on Langcaster with an Orchestra playing Queen's I Want it All

I think this should be one of those lists where we should only do top 50, 'cause there have been WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too many great live solos out there over the years.

Plus I think we should come up with a reasonable criteria for this. How about improv, precision, structure - or something like that?
