I don't know why "My Generation" from Leeds is in this list. It's a great live rock guitar performance, but it's not being used as a vehicle for soloing, really. It's more like a riffage tour-de-force. "Heaven and Hell" would be a better choice.

why do people keep forgetting UFO? maybe generation gap perhaps. in the hard rock/metal world Schenker is a GOD...being listed as a major influence for guitarists such as dimebag, EVH, Hemmet, and others.

So why is the solo from the song "rock bottom" nowhere to be seen on this list. Guitar player magazine ranked rock bottom live as one of top 50 greatest guitar tones of all time...as schenker would play live with his wah pedal on and in mid range to create his unique tone.

I know I am diehard UFO fan, but trying to be as objective as possible....over the many years of listening to the best live rock/hard rock/metal guitar solos...rock bottom would be in my top 10. Schenker's phrasing is phenomenal...not many wasted notes or meandering...which so often occured in '80s hard rock playing. Rock Bottoms solo which runs in my estimate about 5-6 minutes, is an excercise in dynamic tension and melodic structuring which as all great solos do...they tell a story...with a beginning, middle and ending resolve. Some melodic runs played slow, others rapid fast. Never a dull moment...the solo is in the same league as what page would do with zep live...ala dazed or no quarter.

The only other hard rock guitarist that took this live concept of guitar solo structuring to surpass Schenker is Page. IMO. Schenker one of the first in hard rock world, maybe with Blackmore as well to combine blues scales with notes outside the pentatonic in solos. I read interview with Hemmet where he says first time he heard "mother mary" guitar solo with all of schenkers stacatto fast outside the pentatonic scale notes...he knew what style of soloing he wanted to do. EVH also lists Schenker as influence, (as well as holdsworth) not only in rythym riff category (go to youtube and see how similar EVH's doctor song is to Schenkers "hot and ready"), but also in soloing dept.

Please go to youtube and type in rock bottom live (from strangers in the night lp). As Eddie Trunk from That Metal Show on VH-1 says over and over again,...in his opinion the live lp called strangers in the night by UFO is the greatest live hard rock guitar ever captured. I personally put live zep a slight notch higher...but seriously check out the solo in rock bottom live from strangers and tell me you dont think should be somewher in upper half of this list.

not to be picky regarding no quarter live solo from song remains...but IMO page's live work on either since i've been loving you (live song remains the same), or dazed and confused (song remains the same), or whole lotta love medley (how west was won) definitely has better live solo guitar work than no quarter.

just food for thought if anyone else wants to opine.

I'm not being cheeky when I say this, but do you want to take over this? I'm not bothered. I've already got the greatest rock studio guitar solos list.

I throughly injoyed that, despite the fact I despise Malmsteen. That intro was phenominal... And the rest was great too.

Pete Townshend's best live guitar solo, imo: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/The+Q ... ive+/qSseD

There's two solos in there. The short one is from 1:15 to 1:40. The lengthier one is from from 2:30 to 3:25. I love it to pieces.

The top 3 greatest live solo(s) all in 1 song !!

Check out the shred sweeping at around 2:50 - Who else in Rock could do this in the early seventies?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ouPGGLI6Q

Maybe it doesnt count as this performance is only on a compilation DVD, but this clip had 6 million hits before been taken down and has now been reposted. Not bad for a dutch prog outfit !

Should also top the whistling, screaming, pulling faces and flute playing lists

I am obsessed with Akkerman. I have pretty well every solo and Focus release and am continually buying up everything else he has played on.

Luckily I have seen him quite a few times both solo acoustic and with a band. He says that he finds it diffcult to switch regularly from the electric to the acoustic/lute work and that he would ideally need 6 months solid acoustic playing to get back to the standards he himself would require for a tour (but he never does) although he has said that he will stop playing the electric at 70 and concentrate on his classical/acoustic playing.

Two of my faves

This is him at 64 - Still rocks harder and faster than most guys half his age
