I guess your seemingly restrained opinion on this matter means that you didn't see Dreww's comparison between Avengers and Transformers, where he absolutely hated the former and called the latter "pure popcorn"...

I have and I was referencing Dreww's argument in particular.

Ah, okay.

I love Dreww and all, but I just find it baffling that someone has the mindset to think that a film as crass and sloppily made as the first Transformers is vastly superior to the well-crafted, good clean fun that is The Avengers.

The Avengers isn't really good "clean" fun. Loki did call. Black Widow a "mewling quim" after all.

It's clean compared to pissing robots and parents "comically" inquiring about masturbation. Besides, the kids probably aren't going to know what a quim is.

i still think you guys are getting the first Transformers mixed up with the sequels. in fact, i remember the buzz around the first Transformers being almost universally positive. only in hindsight, after the sequels bombed, did it become cool to hate the first one.

(^generalization of course. i realize there are exceptions and people are welcome to hate the first one too. but i wish it would be separate from the sequels)

I haven't even seen the sequels, I just know that the first film is probably the most horribly composed and edited film I've ever seen become a commercial success.

Transformers is so much better than The Avengers the end. The idea that it is a structureless mess of a movie is so completely wrong that I can't even address it other than to say that it's a fraudulent attempt to sound smart. The Avengers makes way less structural sense and is much more poorly shot and edited and has far more lines of tin-eared, meaningless dialogue. Also Tranformers manages to be genuinely funny on occasion, something no Marvel outside the first Iron Man or the Maguire Spider-Man movies have ever done.

You clearly haven't seen the film in a while. Baz Luhrmann movies have better editing.

It's one thing to defend Roland Emmerich films for being big dumb fun, because Emmerich is actually a competent filmmaker with a solid understanding of the technical fundamentals of filmmaking. Michael Bay isn't even that, he's just Uwe Boll with a budget.

Again I haven't seen The Avengers yet, and I never watched Buffy or Firefly either so I don't really know much about Whedon's style. I did watch a few episodes of Angel though and it was fucking terrible, so much so that it makes me reluctant to watch anything with Whedon's name attached to it.

I can't wait for this.

Also, I posted this in the Films of 2013 thread and it took me 2 days to realize my mistake, but:
Cloud Atlas Trailer - Youtube

This looks sumptuous.
