1. The Tree Of Life
2. Rundskop (Bullhead)
3. Rango
4. The Green Hornet

Which leads me to the fillowing: look out for a Belgian film callen Rundskop(or Bullhead). It's an excellent drama, half about a guy who takes hormones to keep himself in balance, half about the investigation surrounding a murder of a Flemish cop (which happened here irl a while ago), set against a backdrop of the illegal hormone trade within the Belgian agriculutural underworld.

I have recently taken a real interest in the history of Flemish cinema, because there were no real modern movies worth watching. But I daresay that this film rates very highly and can be considered an instant classic of Flemish cinema. The cinematography by Nicolas Karakatsanis is really good; he manages to capture very much of Flemish life outside the cities, by means of landscape footage alone.

So watch out for this movie, if it were ever to cross the Atlantic...

1. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
2. Meek's Cutoff
3. Rango
4. 13 Assassins
5. Hanna

Had I seen Certified Copy this year instead of last...it honestly would be a close call w/ Uncle Boonmee, but since Joe makes the bigger statement with as beguiling a film I think I'd give it to him. Both are two strong openings for the new decade, however. Meek's is up there.

Making the trek up to Nashville tomorrow to see Meek's Cutoff. The only problem is my dad's seeing it with me and sometimes when I watch difficult movies with non-cinephiles I worry too much about the them being bored to really enjoy it myself, but hopefully I'll be able to compartmentalize that and just enjoy it. In any case, cannot wait.

I know, it always makes me feel bad somehow to recommend a movie to someone and find out they did not appreciate it at all (There Will Be Blood  ). Is Meek's Cutoff not an accessible movie for the bad taste friends though? The IMDb page didn't make it seem like an impossible-to-like-if-you-don't-dig-cinema film tbh. But I know nothing of it, or of the director.

I went to see Meek's with two friends: one is a classic cinephile but he hadn't seen Reichardt's before and the other one is more a blockbuster kind of movie lover, so no "art films" for him. So the first guy and myself were enjoying the movie (I love Reichardt and I fucking love Williams) and the other guy was boring the shit out of him, you know, the film has slow pace. Anyway, on our way home we started to talk about the movie, you know, what it was trying to say and all that shit... and after that talking I ended loving the film (even more) and the second guy did find its greatness. It's all about the talking right after watching the film.

I just watched the – objectively – worst movie of all time yesterday:

If you've seen it, I am terribly sorry.

I heard that Prometheus was no longer a prequel to Alien, I thought it had developed into an independent project
