I'm sure everyone who posts regularly in the movie section of DDD is familiar with They Shoot Pictures Don't They.com. Both the list of the 1,000 greatest films and the list of the 21st century's most acclaimed films I consider to be the most accurate and resourceful ranked film lists out there. Hell, I've already wasted whole weekends thumbing through the lists and the directors pages. The only complaint I have about the site is their recommendation system, which is all sorts of fucked up.

Thoughts?

I think it's great, probably the only list site where I like to apply it to my to see list and hack away at it. Lot of stuff I disagree with them rec wise, but usually you can't win em all with sites anyway.

Great compilers of information.

But they gave Tarkovsky a 7.

"7. Above Average Filmmaker Generally speaking, these filmmakers have produced work encompassing a reasonably high standard of professional excellence. Their cinematic vision, though flawed in some way, is by and large fairly impressive, and often inspirational."

Yeah right. Meanwhile the Otto Preminger is a 9. Kill me now.

Yeah even though I do like some Preminger, that doesn't make sense that Tark gets a 7 and he's in the top 25 of all time. Never did get their rating system when it comes to directors.

The Geoff Andrew quote is shit, like everything else he has ever said about anything. He recently wrote an article on Capra for Time Out and I left a pretty nasty comment on it (even though I wrote "chance" instead of "stance" and ended up looking like an idiot :ugh: ).

Yeah, their scores for the directors suck too. It's all 'bout the lists baby, what can I say.

Yeah I've turned into one of those comment guys. Recently left a comment on The Atlantic defending BR Myer's ridicule of the overrated book Freedom by Jonathan Franzen.

I didn't know they gave ratings to directors, is that new, I should check it out.

They gave Bergman a 9, that's not so bad.

I actually like the similar directors links, I've found a few awesome directors that way I wouldn't have otherwise.

Their scores for the director are the scores from the guy who runs the site; the lists are the compiler of other information

The all time top 1000 was updated the other day. Not a lot of huge changes though. It will be interesting to see the results of the next Sight and Sound poll next year.

they need to make the whole 1000 picture based with little blurbs. They're getting there tho, slowly but surely

Whoa, very happy at La Cheinne moving up 202 spots! Definitely the most underrated Renoir.
