start with patterns that alternate 1:1 and 1:2 ratios, then do 1:1 and 1:3, then do combinations of 1:2 and 1:3.. a good teacher should be able to select some pieces that'll help you train on

i've started improvising on my dad's keyboard the past couple of days, and end up sounding like keith jarrett/tigran hamasyan, i.e., i set up an ostinato with either hand and do a modal improvisation with the other hand... it may sound crazy but it's true: even without possessing any real keyboard technique, i've achieved more phrasing-wise and melody-wise at the keyboard in two days than i have with that devil's instrument, the guitar, in 9 years... :ugh:

I need to improvise more on the piano than I do.

have a chord in mind, hit a different chord, and force yourself to find a way to the 'intended' chord with something that's a logical bridge between the two and sounds good. only because i find improv to be most necessary when redacting a fuck up

I've been dabbling in keyboard lately, mostly just trying to work out melodies from ear (some 8-bit tunes, Mozart, Take Me Out To the Ball Game, tv and movie themes, the usual), but have no idea what else I'm supposed to do with this thing. Like what does playing scales mean? Is it just playing notes inside the scale or what? If so, isn't c-chromatic cover the whole damn thing, how's that supposed to help me?

the idea behind playing scales is to improve muscle memory to form different chord shapes so that it's easier to do things in different keys / improving accuracy and speed

And it's just playing the notes in succession?

yup, up, then down, then up, then down, then run two octaves up, octave down, move all around the piano
