Who is your favorite of these pre-British Invasion artists?

You mean pre-British Invasion rock artists.
Anyway, I voted for Cooke

The Beach Boys and Dylan don't belong on there. Yes, they were popular in America a little before the Beatles were, but they each started recording at about the same time as the Beatles did.

Dylan's first album was released in 1962.
The Beach Boys in 1961 I believe.

Even if there wasn't THAT much of a difference, they still technically count because the British Invasion didn't "officially" spearhead until 64.

The Beach Boys had a single out in 1961, but no albums til 1962.

Like I said, they were both popular in America before the Beatles were, but the Beatles were popular in many countries before Dylan was popular in America. His first album did not chart. The Beatles had a hit single in the UK already in 1962.

Dylan and the Beach Boys are much more contemoraries of the Beatles than they are pre-British Invasion artists.

They're not hugely popular on DDD unfortunately, except by a select few. I love Diddley personally.

That the Beach Boys album came out in 62 still proves my point. That British Invasion happened in 64. Even if it's merely two years, it still pre-dates it. So it counts.

Dylan's The Times They Are-Changin' was already causing somewhat of a stir in 1963, I believe.
Still a year before the Invasion came.

No, "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is from 64.

His 63 stuff is "Blowin' In The Wind" and "Don't Think Twice" and the rest of the things on "Freewheelin."

Dylan gets my vote.

And the Everly Brothers. Only fifteen slots available, though.

Voted Beach Boys, with Elvis right behind.

That's why he shouldn't have included Beach Boys and Dylan, who were really contemporaries of the Beatles.

Well, they were both active recording artists in the USA prior to the British Invasion. Perhaps not the best choices, but not wrong.

I agree they qualify, but I don't think they fit the spirit of the question. Essentially by voting Beach Boys you are saying that their 1962-1963 releases alone trump everything that Elvis did from 1954-1963. Whoever you vote for it should be based only on what they did before 1964.

Otherwise you can say that your favorite pre British invasion act is Ronnie James Dio or Simon and Garfunkel or Aretha Franlin or Stevie Wonder, anybody who made at least one record before 1964.

Yeah, I wasn't looking at it that way. For just pre-British Invasion material, Elvis wins.
