A band that gets lots of bad rep. Sure, they were poppy and commercial with cheese ballads, but every AOR band was like that. With Journey, you should just ignore that and enjoy the pure singing ability of Steve Perry and guitar playing ability of Neal Schon. Those 2 were definitely one of the best vocal/guitar combos ever.

An amazing song to start the thread:

It's not sacrilege, I too prefer the pre-Perry lineup by far. At least musically. Schon's playing was better on those first few albums, imo. They were more like a fusion band, amazing stuff.

But you cant deny Perry took them to a whole new dimension. Cheesy or not, I mean....he's Steve fucking Perry!

Beast, that's not unusual at all, I know lots of people who prefer the early Journey. I can't say I blame them, the early lineup is more artistically and less commercially oriented.
Of course, although I haven't heard that much early stuff, I prefer Perry period. They were commercial and cheesy, but Perry's voice is one of a kind and they've written some of the best melodic rock songs and ballads ever.

There are some songs with Perry that I absolutely LOVE though...like Who's Cryin' Now and Something To Hide, those are the big two for me...

But anyway, this is incredible...

I knew you were going to post that one! Man, Schon was such a beast back then.

Oh, and Something To Hide is defnitely Perry's tone at it's best.

I live in Miami now, but I grew up in Michigan. And I've got friends who love that corporate rock. When I go up there for the holidays, I guarantee you someone is gonna put on the REO Christmas album (again).

I've been told that Arch Allies is the greatest live album ever. And that Corporate America is even better than Don't Look Back. For the sake of my friendships, I listen to the music and smile politely. Every once in a while, you hear a decent song come thru on the newer material.

On that most recent album, Schon took over all the songwriting and it shows with a real emphasis on the guitar. IMO it's over-produced like most arena rock, but it has better, harder rocking guitar work than many glam metal bands ever did. I was pleasantly surprised to find my toe tapping to more than a few of them. If they'd had Perry back, they could have gotten two or three hits outta that record.

Not a lot of range left, but I think he sounds damn good still. That voice still has a lot to give us, hope he starts recording again.
