R.I.P. Sam Rivers. Listened to Dimensions & Extensions earlier, listening to Crystals now, and will listen to Contours after. What a fabulous and idiosyncratic jazz musician, straddling free jazz but eminently listenable.

I made my friend a playlist of my favorite jazz from the 1970s, although I used a pretty liberal definition of jazz. Might as well post it in case anyone wants to listen

liberal, indeed... "meeting of the spirits" sticks out like a sore thumb among your choices!

most of my favorite jazz from 70s comes from the ECM label... case in point...

Can somebody help me find a Conference of the Birds download? I've been having a shitty time of it because so many are down due to copyright infringement.

Haha, yes, but you have to admit that is a great track regardless.

Does anyone know where I can download a full version of Billie Holiday's The Ultimate Collection? I've been looking for it around the net but all I can find is a version with 32 songs instead of the full 42. I've been also looking for Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944) but all I found was a version with many of the songs on the wrong disc and I'm too lazy to reorder them.

Are these the best place to start with Billie btw? Well, I've already listened to A Musical Romance a bunch but I assume collections like these are the next logical place to go.

billie holiday is one of the tricky artists as far as purchasing her music goes because columbia, verve and decca all have compilations titled 'the billie holiday story'.

her music is usually divided into two periods, 'lady day' should cover her early period well enough, and 'lady autumn' should cover her latter (the darker, more depressing billie) well enough. strangely enough, none of the regular comps (the ultimate billie holiday, gold collection etc) represent her overall career.

What would be the best way to obtain some Charlie Christian?

by far the best way to obtain charlie christian is by listening to "live at minton's".... i've always found his benny goodman recordings underwhelming - not that music isn't good, but his guitar is barely featured at all in them! that jam session is by far the best playing i've heard by him.

yeah agreed with george. there is supposed to be some 40 minute solo out there from one of his shows with goodman, i remember searching for it fanatically some years back but to no avail.
