Soul, Funk, and R&B thread

just saw Mayer Hawthorne live last night. I think sometimes people hate on him because he mimics the soul/R&B sound of yesteryear rather than re-appropriating a few tropes of the style into something more modern and original. But it's such a fantastic imitation that I don't see any problem with it. Plus, how else are you going to hear this kind of music in a live setting without attending the filming of a PBS special? Plus, it's not a sole ripoff of a specific time period, as he draws influence from multiple scenes and eras.

The show was great, and I'd recommend it to anyone who loves R&B. His band is really on-point and talented. It was just a great time, lots of doing the twist and swing dancing and whatever other dances people know about that happened before we were born. You know it's a good show when all the security staff are dancing with each other the whole time :lol:

Saw that on Pitchfork and consequently listened to Voodoo today. Still leaves me speechless and I'm more excited than ever for this new album.

Nice to hear his voice being pretty much intact, that's some sexy soaring falsetto right there.

Also, totally agree about the piano solo.

I never know where to post disco links - in some ways they fit in the Soul, Pop and Electronic threads. Usually I stick them in the Electronic thread as the people who I think like it the most on here will check that thread for sure.
