I remember saying, ‘This is going to be harder for people to swallow.’ There’s no doubt about it: people are going to react to this. It wasn’t being bummed about it or a critical comment of the music or anything — I’m really stoked and I think the record’s amazing, personally. But there was an instant melodic gratification to Merriweather and I think we intentionally made a record this time that is a lot more…um… [laughs] We took a left turn at weird town. For the most part, every song, in terms of the way the record is laid out and the choices we made sonically, is way more challenging. And that’s been verified by every person I’ve played it for so far. People have said they love the record. Friends of ours have said it took them two or three times to even understand it. Merriweather is not that. From the first note of Merriweather you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I just wanna dance’ or ‘My heart’s exploding.’ This is more like, ‘This is amazing but I’m confused and I don’t quite know what’s going on and I think I need to listen to it again and maybe I should turn it off.’

Quite the modest one, I see.

I don't think it was that arrogant a comment to be honest. Really excited for this album.

Yeah. If anything, that last quote is exactly the way I felt when I first listened to Sung Tongs. Exciting.

Hahaha, so ugly. But whatever their covers have never been that great. I can't wait for the album itself, it's gonna slay.

I like the Sung Tongs, Feels and Strawberry Jam coves a lot. MPP looks like they chose the first image they got when they typed "optimal illusion" in google image search.

I'm excited for this new album especially since it's supposed be less poppy than Merriweather Post Pavilion, which was a big step down for me, but holy crap are the title and cover bad. Hope the music's not anything close to those in quality.

tbh I like the cover. Fairly certain they make the covers in relation how the record sounds (what covers should be), and based on the color scheme of that cover, this album is gonna be insane

Interesting article, but don't take the breakup talk seriously

I love the way they are describing the album though. I'm hoping this "break up" will give this album a sense of real urgency and I like that it will be more organic and visceral. Even after all this time I still can't really get into MPP.

Don't take that breakup talk seriously – Panda's said similar things after pretty much all of the past 5 or so releases. He just doesn't know what they're going to do next and NME's sensationalizing it. Also, it wasn't recorded lo-fi in Baltimore, but hi-fi (I assume) in Texas.

So can we talk about Here Comes the Indian for a minute? I've had a mild obsession with it over the past few days.
