i think wanta means before that. like on the old forum when i was about 17 or 18 and my favourite artists were elliott smith, neil young, nick cave, leonard cohen and red house painters, because im still a straight-up stephin merritt fanboy now, but i just kinda grew out of the folk thing, i still like it, but i can only listen to it in small doses now. i used to only listen to sad and/or serious music, whereas nowadays i much prefer happy, cute, funny and/or fun music.

if youd have told me 3 years ago that i would much prefer listening to cutesy indie pop, chart pop, hip hop and dance music to introspective folk/singer-songwriters and serious/downbeat indie rock artists i probably wouldve just turned my nose up at you and scourned

If you had told me 6 months ago that I would enjoy certain types of dubstep and DnB I would have told you you were literally insane.

Why listen to the xx when you can listen to Young Marble Giants?

It's like listening to Coldplay when you can listen to Radiohead or listening to Queen when you listen to Sparks.

to be fair I always thought the YMG comparison was never that apt unless you want to belittle the xx to just whispers and sparseness. YMG is closer to the post punk tradition. They're dirtier and in comparison, actually far more dense than the xx. Most of the songs off Colossal Youth depend on a lot of motorik repetition and grooving within that. YMG just tend to do it in a less rapid way, so there's space around their sound, but I see them having more similarities with a band like Gang of Four than the XX.

To me the XX is special because I believe their music has a closer tradition to R&B and dance, it's just gutted out of all the extraneous layering and garnishes so the effect is something profoundly understated. And being a cleaner version of some band before never seemed like an insult, since I think they are much more meticulous and exacting than YMG ever was. They are working with tons more negative space. YMG has a lot of dirtiness so there's room for mistakes, so rhythm can slip and be sloppy and they'd be fine. But if the xx don't hit their marks (their x's--oh shii) at the precise moment, then their songs are kaput. They would lose their unique appeal of having immense power in simple chord changes, for example in a song like "Islands". This is why jamie xx isn't just the master of all blades, as the vocals are imperative to the successful execution of the music's rhythmic structure (for me their vocals act as a source of rhythm as well). Ironically, The XX who use more space, can feel more airtight than YMG, whose freer in a denser environment.

AND another reason you should still listen to the xx is the updated production value which augments to what they're doing.

I personally think "Jumanji" is the best thing she's done yet. Also "Esta Noche" from "Fantasea" is her catchiest track so far.

I think people aren't giving her that much credit because she hasn't put out a song that does everything she's capable of so well as 212. That track was like a winning decathlete, but her other tracks are like the athletes who win individual events. "Liquorice" and "1991" have just as good rapping as "212," but they aren't as catchy. "Jumanji" is just as fun, but it doesn't have the theatrical element that "212" has. "Esta Noche" is catchier but the rapping isn't as great.
