Popularity doesn't matter here.

I know ... the top that I posted above was based on Acclaim / Reputation, skill, influence, and Originality, the same criteria as the topic of rock vocalists.

Based on the criteria of the author of the topic, I think it looks like this:

Stevie Wonder
Ray Charles
Marvin Gaye
Michael Jackson
Jackie Wilson
Sam Cooke
James Brown
Otis Redding
Luther Vandross
Smokey Robinson

Sorry to throw a monkey into the wrench...but NO WAY in heck is Stevie a better "vocalist" than several in this top 10. Songwriter? ??...Yes...Musician???...Absolutely...Producer???...Perhaps...SINGER???...NO WAY. No vocal range except when his voice changed from Little Stevie to Big Stevie. Little stylistic versatility. Nothing smooth about his voice at all.

Are you serious? Wonder is one of the most talented of the bunch, also extremely influential. Stop rambling nonsense.

I dont know about that.

Aside from the 'big three', I'd put Gaye, Redding, and Charles ahead of him.
Maybe Brown too....

I thought we were making this to be the same criteria as the other list? What's changed?

We are, and by that criteria, no way is Wonder top 5.
He has some influence, but not nearly as much as Timi and Bruno would have you believe (winning Grammy awards is notable, but it means nothing in terms of this list).
The only thing he really excels in is skill.

Why, then, is he so high on the overall list?

Personally I question him being QUITE that high.
Now that I think of it, he shouldnt be ahead of Redding or Charles.

I wasn't talking about his placement but rather about those ignorant and silly remarks.

And throw in Sam Cooke (probably the most influential of all) and Jackie Wilson easily above Stevie, who doesn't even take #1 on my list of Greatest "visually impared" Soul/R&B singers.

David Ruffin and Teddy P are two more whom I believe fly high above Stevie on this list.

Especially Ruffin. Many Soul and Motown devotees consider him the greatest of all.
