I think about this all the time. These four are definites, more or less:

NMH - ITAOtS (Song, not album, though that might even be better. The ultimate affirmation of life beyond/through death, etc.)
Joy Division - Atmosphere (May omit this if it's a self-inflicted dealio, as I wouldn't want the mourners to feel they're being attacked.)
Magnetic Fields - Busby Berkeley Dreams (Duh. They've gotta be on here somewhere. This isn't their saddest song but it fits the funeral mood; really, I think this is the most hopeful yet sober way of looking at death.)
Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man - (It's the greatest song ever, for one. And nothing wrong with taking a cue from HST.)

Would perhaps toss in a Waits ballad and something irreverent to throw people off: Chrissy Kiss the Corpse or almost any Misfits song would do.

The Flaming Lips - "Feeling Yourself Disintegrate"

or

Tom Waits - "Dirt in the Ground"

Depends on what sort of person I become as I age. If I'm a vibrant and happy old person, the FLips. If I'm a dastardly old curmudgeon, then Tom Waits.

Tell you what though, the finger buffet afterwards better be up to snuff after slogging through about 5 hours of classic rock ballads.

'Arcade Fire - Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)' definitely!

Other options which more than often cross my mind for this topic:

Sigur Ros - Viorar Vel Til Loftarasa
The Cure - Disintegration
Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film)
Slint - Washer
Mr. Bungle - Retrovertigo
Coil - Going Up
Swans - Miracle of Love
