Why is Television called art-punk? I've only heard Marquee Moon but it doesn't sound very punky to me, just straight up rock.

It has a pretty punky asthetic in many of the reefs and the vocal delivery - it's obviously quite an intricate and technical album - I think art-punk is a good word to use to describe the album.

The vocals definitely have a punk aesthetic to them, kind of a "Fuck technical skill, I'll sing out of my range if I want to" attitude. I think that and the time of the release made them more associated with the punk movement than they otherwise would have been. I'm listening to Guiding Light right now, and it's almost an anti-punk song: a slow-ish, gentle ballad, a duet between guitar and piano, a soothing, catchy bassline, and a closing guitar solo that sounds like it could've been in a Lynyrd Skynyrd song. The whole album to me feels like an exploration into all the different styles of rock n' roll. Some are more rocking tunes, some slow and less aggressive, and they even have an artsy epic as the centerpiece of the album. I guess it's not a big deal. I'm just not a big punk fan and would rather Television not be associated with the movement.

You can't really get away from that with Television - admittedly a lot of that is from their early live shows fomr 74-77, rather than Marquee Moon necessarily.

Guiding Light kicks ass, whatever Television are.

Does anyone know of any folk musicians/bands who sing in French?
Preferably something with sparse instrumentation, so the vocals are clear
I'm trying to learn the language, and I listen to a lot of music, so I figured why not.

If anyone is a fan of the Jefferson Airplane songs Somebody To Love and White Rabbit they may be interested to hear these rips of them from the original mono LP. Far less reverby sound here. It may take a little getting used to for those who have only heard the stereo versions for years but I really like the way these sound. Make sure you have a program that can play flacs though:

Ahh yeah, I used to have the gold CD of Surrealistic Pillow which had both the mono and stereo versions of the album.

Bought original pressings of both Brain Salad Surgery (mostly for the cover, honestly.. only ever heard it once) and Michael Jackson's 'Bad' on vinyl... .BSS i got for $1... something like 65USC and the MJ for $4.. something like $1.80-2.20USD
