As a character study, it feels like it has a more intriguing arc than most albums of any genre I've heard, to the point where it feels cinematic in the way it moves. I think it's interesting how "We Got it for Cheap" and "Momma I'm So Sorry" paints a picture of their lifestyle and worldview, really succinctly summarizing where they are and how they got there. The last verse of "Momma I'm So Sorry" especially gets me (the one that starts with "I'm sorry grandmama for mistakes I have made"), because he tries to truly apologize for the way he's put himself in danger, but as he justifies his reasons for doing so ("place you in the flowerbed, porcelain showerheads throughout the house, and keep the young'ns mouths fed") he decides, fuck it, it was all worth it ("and when I'm gone, I hope it is said I gave structure to the youth by the example I led"), and from that moment on, it's pretty much ice-cold and remorseless until "Nightmares."
My only problem with the album is that I feel like "Nightmares" was trying to accomplish a similar task as "Momma I'm So Sorry," with the inherent moral conflicts of their lifestyle, but it just isn't as good a song as the others.
