The Beatles and The Rolling Stones vs. The Beach Boys and Chicago

Two British bands and two American bands who first charted in the 1960s: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and Chicago. They are the top four charting Rock And Roll bands of all-time on both, the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard 100 singles chart. Today I will look at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. The Beatles are number one overall by far. The Rolling Stones are a close second. Further down the list are the Beach Boys at a distant third. Chicago comes in at number four, and they have a high mountain to climb to get close to the Beach Boys. Overall on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, the Beatles are # 3, the Rolling Stones are # 5, the Beach Boys are # 12 and Chicago is # 24. The Beatles will always be the number one band on the list, the Rolling Stones will always be number two, and the Beach Boys will always be number three. That will never change. Chicago is a little iffy on holding on to that number four spot forever when its got bands like the Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and the Grateful Dead on its tail on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Pink Floyd has a new album coming out soon. When the last Bee Gee Barry Gibb dies, the Bee Gees albums will re-chart even higher and maybe new greatest hits albums will be produced and the Bee Gees will continue to duke it out with Chicago for that number 4 spot. VH1's 1998 list of the 100 Greatest Artist of Rock And Roll, which was voted on by the musicians themselves, included all the bands I mentioned above, except for Chicago. Also, all the bands I have mentioned above are in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, except for Chicago. Chicago is not as popular with contemporaries, critics and the public as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys are. Also, the Beach Boys are not as popular as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beach Boys have a lot more in common with Chicago than with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. A lot of the Beach Boys later albums failed to crack the top 40, just like a lot of Chicago's later albums failed to crack the top 40 as well. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones never had those issues. All of the Beatles studio albums were either number 1 or number 2 albums. All of the Rolling Stones studio albums were either number 1 or top 5 albums, except for their first album. The Beach Boys though, attained something that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Chicago never did--a number one live album! Chicago had more number one albums than the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys and Chicago toured together in the 70s and 80s. Did the Beatles and the Rolling Stones ever tour together, or perform together at least one concert?

In all seriousness I do love that first Chicago album, and they had some great singles after that, once they lost Terry Kath though. :ugh:

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones vs. The Beach Boys and Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!)

Two British bands and two American bands who first charted in the 1960s: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!). Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) comes in at number four, and they have a high mountain to climb to get close to the Beach Boys. Overall on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, the Beatles are # 3, the Rolling Stones are # 5, the Beach Boys are # 12 and Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) is # 24. The Beatles will always be the number one band on the list, the Rolling Stones will always be number two, and the Beach Boys will always be number three. That will never change. Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) is a little iffy on holding on to that number four spot forever when its got bands like the Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and the Grateful Dead on its tail on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Pink Floyd has a new album coming out soon. When the last Bee Gee Barry Gibb dies, the Bee Gees albums will re-chart even higher and maybe new greatest hits albums will be produced and the Bee Gees will continue to duke it out with Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) for that number 4 spot. VH1's 1998 list of the 100 Greatest Artist of Rock And Roll, which was voted on by the musicians themselves, included all the bands I mentioned above, except for Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!). Also, all the bands I have mentioned above are in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, except for Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!). Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) is not as popular with contemporaries, critics and the public as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys are. Also, the Beach Boys are not as popular as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beach Boys have a lot more in common with Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) than with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. A lot of the Beach Boys later albums failed to crack the top 40, just like a lot of Chicago's (FAP-FAP-FAP!) later albums failed to crack the top 40 as well. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones never had those issues. The Beach Boys though, attained something that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) never did--a number one live album! Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) had more number one albums than the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys and Chicago (FAP-FAP-FAP!) toured together in the 70s and 80s. Did the Beatles and the Rolling Stones ever tour together, or perform together at least one concert?

They were both on the bill for the 1964 and 1965 NME Pollwinners' concerts.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones vs. The Beach Boys and Chicago

No 21st century rock and roll bands will ever score 50, 60 or 70 hits on the Billboard 100 Singles Chart, or score 10 or 20 number one hits. The music industry is dead! No new bands will be able to have that kind of success. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and Chicago are locked in. They will never be surpassed by any bands, new or old. No band will surpass the Bee Gees either. More on the Bee Gees tomorrow. Overall, the Beatles are # 2 behind Elvis Presley. The Rolling Stones are # 8, the Beach Boys are # 17, and Chicago is # 20. Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead and Aerosmith are no threat to Chicago on the singles chart, neither is any other band. They don't come anywhere close to Chicago the way they do on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart.

The Beach Boys Concert album was not live. The album was released at the height of their popularity. It was one of the first gatefold albums, with many photos of their concert at Sacramento's Memorial Auditorium. Essentially, it was a "greatest hits" record, with fewer Wrecking Crew members playing just enough instruments to sound sort of like the Beach Boys would have sounded live. All the cuts (except one) were studio recordings, rerecording tunes they played on tour that year... just looser than the originals, with audience sounds overdubbed. One cut (was it Barbara Ann?) was actually recorded live, and sound appropriately out of tune and with terrible harmonies. The Beach Boys had not released a greatest hits album at the time, so not just real fans, but also casual fans bought it. It was as great a lie as the Beach Boys playing on their hit singles.

Pet Sounds not reaching #1 is easy. Beach Boys' fans were, for the most part, anti-hippie, anti-psychedelic, anti-experimental. These were not actual surfers... they were kids across the country who loved the idea of California... beaches, convertibles, hot rods, high school football without rain, etc. Pet Sounds was Brian Wilson's jealousy over where the Beatles were going. And every song (except Sloop John B, which even Brian did not want on the album) was about his sad breakup... how she changed and didn't understand him changing. Teens didn't want to hear that grown-up whining. He left his audience behind, so they left the album on the shelves. Oh, and Capitol refused to promote it. At least not very well.
