I can kinda sympathise with Chaplin in the sense that I've stuck away at albums that simply haven't made sense for first several listens in a row. Maybe a small thing here or there will reveal itself to me after each listen. But usually I can tell that eventually, I'll really enjoy it. A good example of this is Madvillainy. I remember Wanta uploading this as his album of the day pick years ago, lauding it maybe the finest example of modern hip hop. Back then, I hadn't heard much more hip hop than Eminem, Biggie and Pac (great as they all are). It just didn't make sense to me at all - the samples, the lack of hooks, the movie/tv show samples, DOOM's rapping, the instrumentals - from the first moment I heard that accordion sample I was confused. I had to almost reprogramme my mind for it to click, but now it's one my staple albums, hip hop or otherwise. I can also see what he means about breaking away from his favourites - it's always great to comfort listen, but it can also be equally rewarding to spend some time with an artist you don't know well, to try and expand your palette. The only thing I don't get is why you would consistently go back to the Beatles and Radiohead after so long. They may not be in your favourites, but I suspect you do quite enjoy listening to them - I'm certain they don't actively bother you.

I guess it is more of a thought process of "This music is interesting as hell. If I listen to it enough, I may get into the right mindset to enjoy it"

Beatles and Radiohead haven't really clicked yet, but maybe they will someday

if you're enjoying it, it's clicked. if not, you should move along and explore another dozen acts. beatles and radiohead aren't all that special in the grand scheme of things; they need not be liked by everyone who listens to them you know

No, my reasoning isn't "Man, I can't stand these guys. But everyone else seems to like them so I'd better beat them into my head til I like them too."

It's more "This artist is interesting to me, and if you catch me in the right mood, I might like it". Artists like Radiohead, Captain Beefheart, and so on are artists I can see myself liking but haven't been in the right state of mind to enjoy them. It was the same with Tom Waits and Nick Cave at first, but after repeated listens they're now two of my favorite artists of all time. Whereas artists like Sonic Youth and John Coltrane don't have ANY of the qualities I look for when listening to music.

I think I get what Chaplin is saying. There are a lot of movies where I really feel like they were well done, I appreciate what was put into it, and I think the time I spent watching it was well spent, but maybe I don't feel like watching it more than once.

This. I've experienced this with movies before, definitely.

That list is strangely awesome. Really strong choices all around(except Symbolic which I haven't heard and probably would not like at this time).
