Not really sexism but lookism. People with good singing voices can manipulate their mouths well.

Even so, it seems pretty clear to me that some a lot of people value music at least partially for its ability to entertain and people often find specific talents or unique traits (i.e. the ability to hold a tune and have an aesthetically pleasing voice) to be entertaining. So naturally some people tag more worth to an artist that has talent than one that does not. I see Yousha's comment as simply stating that there is at least one positive quality to Gretchen Wilson as a musical artist, not that it saves her music from being trash (which would constitute fetshizing, imo).

Exactly, I'm seeing it like that too. I could name tons of musicians who have their 'redeeming talents' (singing and guitar playing, for example), kinda to make up for the awful music. Their underlying talents don't change the fact that their music is horrendous, though.

my problem is that i see "talent" as being a subjective measurement of creative expression. whereas here it is used as some sort of difficulty level. and its often limited even in that use. idk how many times i've seen guitar discussion based solely around speed, as if that was the only thing that makes playing guitar difficult. if i see someone play 32nd notes up and down a scale for 2 minutes, my first thought is generally "that guy needs to learn how to play guitar". then again, i also see uninformed peeps who try to lump Vai and Satch in with those idiots (which makes it clear they've never listened to those two before, because they are far from it)... i'm rambling now. anyway, Thurston Moore > Michael Angelo Batio
