It is a pity that, Mozart's wonderful Piano quartet K 478 is not on the list. I think it is equall or may be even
better then K 493. (which is there) Flute quartet K 285 is also beauthiful composition.

Mozart wrote many fine chamber works. Also worth hearing but not on the list are String Quintet No. 6 and String Quartets Nos. 20-23.

The reason I asked abouth k 546 is that, according to wikipedia even "eine kleine Nachtmusik" is a
Chamber work (a quintet in fact) and yet it is not normally listed as such. Same can be said abouth some
of the Divertimenti.

Beethoven was great, but there have been a lot of great works written by other composers too, and Beethoven is pretty generously represented on this list (and on the piano sonatas list).

I agree with you Brian, that one can not have a list made only of works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc. but on the other hand one can not help regreting that so many great works
by thees Giants have not made it to the list. Perhaps extending the list to the same lenght(140)
as the "solo piano" list is a solution? The erly Beethoven quartets can get on the list then
and so can some of Mozart and Mendelson. After all if any of the lists deserves to be large it
is the one for Chamber music.(there are great many good works for it, no less then for solo keyboard)

Beethoven's late string quartets are considered by many to be the greatest music of any kind ever written. There is no way on earth any of e.g. Schubert's works in chamber music come close to any of the late quartets. They are only comparable to Beethoven's early quartets (at best, I might add). Though, I've come to realise Schubert is horrendously overrated in many circles. To the point where people consider his late sonatas and chamber works on the level of late LVB's...

and, likewise, beethoven is horrendously overrated in certain other circles... *hint hint*

Extending the list to #140 is a possibility. If it were, still not all of Beethoven's early quartets would make it, but it would allow 20 more works to get a mention, and there certainly are at least 20 more chamber works worth mentioning.
