I'll try to get my hands on the Pinnock/English recordings Brian.

Currently doing this with the Goldberg Variations:

Plays Perahia's version of variation 1
Plays Gould's version of variation 1
Plays Tureck's version of variation 1
*repeat process for all variations and arias*

Any other great performances I need?
brilliant guitar arrangement by joszef eotvos (who has done other great bach works)

its a shame parkening never recorded more bach pieces but the few he did are absolutely essential

hey hey, i didn't think guitar recordings were allowed (for some strange reason)... of course parkening's recordings of the well-tempered clavier blow all the keyboard recordings ever made out of the water (color/tonal control! vibrato!)

Going through a real "everything in life is boring except for the Goldberg Variations" phase.

Bach experts: what are the most tear-inducing things he's done according to you?

Kind of a standard answer, but probably the air from the 3rd orchestral suite.

no xprt either, and i don't really get misty eyed from bach's music (or any music, for that matter, unless there's special context), but i'll add these obvious ones to those already mentioned by herr pauldrach and rv...

"agnus dei" from the b minor mass (the voice of alfred deller)
"erbarme dich, mein gott" from st. matthew's passion
"prelude #8" from the well-tempered clavier

i asked nick this question, and he said that bach's instrumental music speaks more to his mind than his heart, so his choices would probably have to be cantatas, and i know he's more familiar with them than i am.
