Background: Americana is a subset of American roots music, best defined as "classic American music"
ranging in style from & including elements of folk, country blues, bluegrass, alternative country, rockabilly, neo traditional & roots rock.

These albums were chosen for best identifying, inspiring & encapsulating the heart of tradition & the American experience. As with all lists, this is a subjective list and makes no claim of an official nature.

i'm really surprised that Guitar Town isn't Steve Earle's top placement. not that i'm disappointed, cause sometimes it gets too much hype compared to his later stuff, but i'm surprised. good list overall.

Has anyone given a listen to Harlan Country by Jim Ford? A very rare album from 1969, not really sure what genre it qualifies as (Funk/Soul/Country/Sothern Rock) but its got some catchy tunes. The lyrics would definitely qualify it as "Americana" but I guess Rick excluded it from the list because of its relative obscurity.

Well, when you do, I think you'll agree that it certainly earned its spot on your list. I've only starting discovering "Americana" albums about a year ago. Started with Mickey Newbury's Looks Like Rain and have been eating them up ever since.
