Um...how in the world did that Alison Krauss record get in there? I like Alison more than the next guy, but AFAIK that's not a particularly noteworthy or famous song, let alone one that belongs above "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" or "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Anyone want to explain?

Also:

61. How Do I Live Without You - Trisha Yearwood
88. How Do I Live - Trisha Yearwood

63. Please Remember Me - Tim McGraw
101. Please Remember Me - Tim McGraw

60. Your Still The One - Shania Twain
145. You're Still The One - Shania Twain

Looks like some spaces to fill there. I think this was mentioned on the old board, but anyway....

Lew says that Chris F, who was the editor of this list, isn't here anymore. So the list is up for grabs. I don't claim to be any great expert on country music, but I certainly think I can improve on this. If someone else with more expertise steps forward, they can have it; if not, I'll take it.

So--what's missing from the list? A few things jumped out at me: for example, there is nothing by Eddy Arnold, who is a huge name in the country world. I'm thinking "The Cattle Call", "Make The World Go Away", and "I'll Hold You In My Heart (Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)". The latter spent 21 weeks at number one on the Billboard country chart, only giving way to his follow up, "Anytime"; Arnold ended up holding the top spot for over a year, from November 1, 1947 to November 13, 1948 when he was finally dethroned by Jimmy Wakely's "One Has My Name (The Other Has My Heart)". (No, I don't know all this off the top of my head; I'm just getting it from a Joel Whitburn book.)

Also unrepresented are Porter Wagoner ("A Satisfied Mind" would be the obvious choice), Hank Snow ("I'm Moving On"), and Barbara Mandrell (maybe "Sleeping Single In A Double Bed" and/or "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool").

So, anyone out there--what else is missing? What should move up? What should move down? Any idea why that Alison Krauss song is so high? Any and all help appreciated.

Well, I know a bit about Alternative Country and Bluegrass, and a little bit about pre-1970 Country Music.

Not sure how important Alternative Country artists are on Country Music as a whole, but I recall Lyle Lovett being one of the very few that had Country mainstream popularity for a time. Out of his songs, I could see "Cowboy Man" and "If I Had A Boat" making the lower parts of this list.

Also, I notice that "Wildwood Flower" by The Carter Family is absent. Top 30?

Chris F. really was an overrated listmaker. He made a couple of really great posts but all of the lists I've seen from him are really flawed. On topic: "You Are My Sunshine" should definitely be on here, a lot of the others should not be on here, and a quite a few should be much a higher ("Wabash Cannonball" at #74?). I agree that "Wildwood Flower" needs to be added. The list doesn't pay enough tribute to the pioneers (nor to their sons). Also "El Paso" has like the coolest lyrics ever.

These are pop songs performed by country artists, not country songs. At least Chris F didn't include something like "Amazed" or "Can't Fight the Moonlight"

Actually, "Amazed" is number 97.

And, honestly, I'm not sure a couple of those songs shouldn't be there. "Amazed" was a huge country hit (as well as a crossover pop hit) and certainly has had an impact on the evolution of the music. But when it's there and Ray Price and Jimmie Rogers aren't, it's incredibly ridiculous.

Thanks for all the suggestions, gang. Keep 'em coming.

Wilco were always on the "alternative" side of "alt country" more than the "country side". Honestly, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" isn't a particularly "country" album (barring "I'm the Man Who Loves You").

Alt Country songs I could see making the bottom of this list:
Lyle Lovett - If I Had A Boat
Robbie Fulks - Fuck This Town
Lucinda Williams - Righteously
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road
Dwight Yoakam - Fast As You

True. But shouldn't some country-rock and alternative country-rock count as well or do we rather make a clearcut border between country and rock with no song being part of both genres?

Jesus, etc. - Wilco (2002)

Wilco were always on the "alternative" side of "alt country" more than the "country side". Honestly, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" isn't a particularly "country" album (barring "I'm the Man Who Loves You").

True. But shouldn't some country-rock and alternative country-rock count as well or do we rather make a clearcut border between country and rock with no song being part of both genres?

I'm certainly not precluding putting all-country stuff on the list, but Wilco seems to me to be a little too far to the alt side--they have never gotten much play on country radio so it's hard to see where they've really had much success or impact within the country genre as a whole. But something like "Fast As You" (or, earlier, "Pancho And Lefty") would seem to fit the list. Ah, but should I use the original "Pancho And Lefty" or the hit version? Hmmm....
