whoa, there's a name that hasn't been brought up since the old days of ddd!!! <3 newb jr
if tatum is god and oscar peterson is son, then newborn is the holy spirit. i kind of think of him as a bluesier version of those two.

i like that analogy. yeah people always seem to forget about phineas, in fact i think i actually prefer him over art, the bluesier feel that you mention. anyway he should definitely be in the top half of the list somewhere

Editor's note:
44. Phineas Newborn

I think Chick Corea and Hiromi Uehara would make the top 5 in skill.

Speaking of Hiromi Uehara, why isn't she on this list???

Chick Corea? Really? Do you have any examples of him showcasing virtuosity on the level of Tatum and Peterson?

I've been listening to Evans like mad. He and Garland have such ability and it ce out so well when they played with Miles. And as a trio, of course.

Chick Corea is a freakin mastermind of fusion keyboard. He is also one of the best virtuoso keyboardists out there; especially considering he plays with one hand when he uses his little keytar. In my opinion he's even more of a virtuoso than Hiromi.
Here's proof of his virtuoso skills:

Very nice, but I don't think I'd call that "virtuosity." That's fast playing, to be sure, and it's a lot of skill, but not on the level of Tatum and Peterson.

I'd still probably say that Corea is among the top fifteen most skilled jazz pianists.

Yeah, I think Corea and even Hiromi would deserve at least the top 15 when it comes to skill. I'm just not too sure who is more skilled, Hiromi or Corea?

For some reason I think Corea is like one of the most skilled pianists, so how are Tatum and Peterson more skilled than guys like Corea or Hiromi? What makes those guys more technical than the rest?

Have you listened to any of Tatum's recordings? There aren't many videos of him playing because of the time period but I'll see what I can dig up. He pulls off anything that Corea's right hand can do just as quickly, plus plays the left hand in a stride style jumping from bassline to accompaniment. It's extremely difficult

That's for Tatum. There's a lot more of Peterson on youtube, make sure to check him out too!

Okay seriously. Why ISN'T Hiromi on this list? She's so unbelievably good it's almost a crime. Plus she's outright manic when she plays.
