That is utterly ridiculous. Give me an actual reason why you think that Jaco Pastorius (who is, of course, a very influential and talented player) is greater than one of the most influential (maybe even more than Mingus), frequently recorded, and highly lauded upright bassists of the 50s and 60s.

Me too, thanks George for the vids.

I still get negative vibe for my choice of Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen @ #9....... otherwise nothing but good energy. Alas, I always try to remember, "human folly does not impede the turning of the stars."

Hey Guys,

This is a great list. I think once you get down to the top 100 it not really a matter of whose better. It more who is your favorite. All of these are wonderful bassists. I know that opinion is probably to politically correct. LOL Soooo, may I make a pitch for one of my all time favorites Doug Watkins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Watkins#Discography)? His career was much to short due to a car accident, but it still was very impressive.

Hey Rick,

Do think Sam Jones is in the next 100 or is his exclusion from the top 100 an oversight? Also, my goal is not to point out people you missed. This list is awesome. I just tend to listen to tunes and look up the bass player. Sam seemed come up a bunch.

Thanks

Larry

Grammy-winning jazz bassist Charlie Haden dead at 77
July 11, 2014, 5:39 PM EST

Legendary jazz musician Charlie Haden has passed away at the age of 76 after a prolonged illness, his record label announced on Friday.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Charlie Haden, born August 6, 1937 in Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away today at 10:11 Pacific time in Los Angeles after a prolonged illness," said Tina Pelikan, ECM Records Publicity, in a statement.
Haden grew up on a farm in Iowa and frequently performed with his family on the radio. After contracting polio at age 15, the illness left him unable to sing, so he turned to jazz and the bass, ultimately becoming one of the pioneers of the genre. His notable recordings include "The Shape of Jazz to Come" with Ornette Coleman.
The multiple Grammy winner picked up his first trophy in 2001, when Haden won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz CD for his album "Nocturne," which contains boleros from Cuba and Mexico. In 2003 he won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Performance for his album "Land of the Sun."
He is survived by Ruth Cameron, his wife of 30 years, and his children Josh, Tanya, Rachel and Petra, who were all by his side at the time of his death.
