Why? Because Hip-Hop has a page like this so why the hell can't metal?

I'm thinking we should start at 83, as alot of the metal albums released in 80-82 (in addition to the years before those) fall mostly under hard rock, but 83 was the year when there were more or less 10 metal albums. Alright, now we're getting some feedback.

In all seriousness, I do think Reign In Blood did more for metal than MOP did. MOP was a good gateway album, and shone a brighter spotlight on thrash from the mainstream, but Reign had direct influence on thrash, black and death metal, and to a small extent Grindcore. It also helps that Lars Ulrich himself thinks Reign is a better album.

Sherick, I have no problem with either one being #2.

Yeah no, MoP was more important than RiB, I thought every Metal fan knew this

Rest of the lists look good. Approve of the '83 and '84 lists, though perhaps add Psalm 9 to the '84 list, for that was a pretty influential and early Doom release.

I kinda feel To Mega Therion and perhaps even Bonded should be ahead of Hell Awaits on the '85 list, Bonded is one of the biggest Thrash classics ever, much more so than Hell Awaits and To Mega Therion defines a lot of Extreme Metal to come. Perhaps also add Pentagram's self-titled for the '85 list for the same reasons I gave to Psalm 9.

On the topic of Doom, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus should definitely be higher on the '86 list, one of the most important Doom releases of all time if not THE most, I'm thinking #4, but at least top 5. You should also definitely add Awaken the Guardian to the '86 list, first wave Prog Metal should not go ignored.

Scum should be higher on the '87 list, definitely higher than, say, INRI, defined a lot more Extreme Metal (at least directly) and was even more popular to boot. The '87 list also needs Hall of the Mountain King, pretty big and popular release from that time.

Blood Fire Death should be higher on the '88 list, ahead of South of Heaven at the least, BFD was an incredible stepping stone towards second wave Black Metal. The bottom two spots on the '88 list look a bit random to me. I would swap those two for Killing Technology, The New Order or perhaps even Transcendence, not sure...

Hope that helps a bit, eventually we should do the years before 1983 as well, tedious as they are...

No, it doesn't. I would never take a guy with Lars' mindset seriously, no matter how serious he actually was.

I actually lean towards Trouble.

Floyo, you don't give any reason why Puppets is better than Reign. I said Reign influenced/created multiple subgenres of metal on its own. Master of Puppets didn't do that. MoP wins on popularity only (and that's because the general public is more comfortable listening to Metallica than they are Slayer). It's not going higher.

I also don't quite agree on Exodus and Frost going above Hell Awaits. True they were massively influential in the regards you mentioned, but Frost got a little bit of flack for going in avant-garde directions (though it was nothing compared to what happened with Into The Pandemonium. For the most part I ordered these by how the appear on the greatest metal albums list. I do love consistency. Though I do agree about Candlemass EDM and Awaken The Guardian.

I do have top 5 lists for 80-82, and all of them are metal albums. Unfortunately you can't expand much further beyond that number (maybe you could for 1980) without putting some hard rock albums in there.

88
1. Queensryche- Operation: Mindcrime
2. Metallica- …and Justice For All
3. Helloween- Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 2
4. Bathory- Blood Fire Death
5. Iron Maiden- Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
6. Slayer- South of Heaven
7. Megadeth- So Far, So Good…So What?
8. Death- Leprosy
9. Ozzy Osbourne- No Rest For The Wicked
10. Vio-lence- Eternal Nightmare

I'm keeping Vio-lence over New Order and Killing Technology because it was a great example of a pure thrash album as opposed to the others because they were trying to add too many progressive elements to thrash that didn't really belong there.
