At any rate, Black Sabbath should be the highest ranking Sabbath song, and it should be top 3. Period.

2nd greatest Sabbath song. I don't think it beats War Pigs.

The Greatest Black Sabbath Songs (IMO)

1. War Pigs
2. Black Sabbath
3. Paranoid
4. Iron Man
5. N.I.B.

Further proof of the influence of "Black Sabbath", still going strong here 25 years after it's birth:

Aside from the vocal style, this song is basically a direct emulation of Black Sabbath.

Also, it appears I'm not alone on this.
From earlier in the thread:

Sherick wrote:
I'm confused as to why it's Paranoid we're talking about, instead of Black Sabbath. It was pretty well established before that that should be Sabbath's highest. Giving such creedence to mainstream popularity here is really silly.

Just a suggestion. Wouldn't it be a better idea to put Black Sabbath on 1 considering the fact that a lot of people would mark that song as the beginning of both heavy and doom metal? Black Sabbath is definitely more of a landmark in metal than Hallowed be Thy Name.

Mainstream popularity is obviously important even though it might go against the "yo bro metal is so anti-establishment" mentality. Also, first does not always equal better. I'm not saying you are wrong, but I disagree with the arguments you are using.

Then you missed my post from the previous page:

Negative Creep wrote:
I think it's pretty clear that, all things considered, Black Sabbath is the greatest metal song of all time.
And no, dont throw that "just because it came first" bullshit at me, 'cause there's more to it than that.
It's influence and impact are out of this galaxy. Think about the things that this song made possible. Every time you hear a metal artist say that they want to SCARE their audience, the influence of that goes directly back to Black Sabbath. And the evil/supernatural themes that also became so popular in metal throughout the 80's and beyond, clearly owe everything to this song as well. Horror/occult/Biblical overtones...this is the blueprint that made it all possible.

And it's impact is indescribable. Even Iommi himself talked about the enormous effect of the song in the early days:
"The critics hated us. Absolutely hated us. And they wouldn't play us on the radio. We really got slammed. And 'Black Sabbath'....my God, the looks on people's faces when we played that song. Everyone told us that it was very 'different'."

And it doesn't do THAT bad in popularity, being a huge crowd favorite that the band always played for a number of years (and even at the reunion).

Honestly, I love Hallowed as much as anyone else, but it's influence and impact are nowhere near the level of Black Sabbath.
And "musical and lyrical quality" is way too subjective...

War Pigs/Paranoid/Iron Man might be more popular, but Black Sabbath has WAY more influence and impact, and that's why we moved it to #1 for Sabbath on the top 10 songs index.

Well I've given my arguments for metal in general. Two people, at least, agreed with me.

It was the prototype for the whole concept of the metal epic. Just listen to the Saint Vitus song I posted above, it's clearly being modeled after Black Sabbath (and that was recorded in 1995). Not to mention even more popular tunes like Hallowed Be Thy Name, which actually owes quite a bit to Black Sabbath, as dmilled explained earlier in the thread.
It was just the entire wellspring for everything that would come to embody metal in the future.

So does anyone other than Sherick and scarified agree with this overall?

Eh, you're probably right.

However you want to rank them, IMO the top 5 should always be Black Sabbath, Hallowed, Paranoid, Angel Of Death, and Master Of Puppets.

Well, I don't know guys. Not everyone will agree that Paranoid is the greatest from Black Sabbath and there will always be debate what should be the order of 'big 4'.

But if at least 3 of you can 'dig' top 4 for Sabbath and can say it in this topic then I can rearrange top 10 a bit.
For the record:
1. Paranoid
2. Black Sabbath
3. Iron Man
4. War Pigs

4. Iron Man
5. NIB

1. Black Sabbath
2. Hallowed Be Thy Name
3. Master of Puppets
4. War Pigs
5. Angel of Death
6. Paranoid

I think Paranoid is certainly greater than War Pigs.
