Further proof of the influence of "Black Sabbath", still going strong here 25 years after it's birth:

Aside from the vocal style, this song is basically a direct emulation of Black Sabbath.

Mainstream popularity is obviously important even though it might go against the "yo bro metal is so anti-establishment" mentality. Also, first does not always equal better. I'm not saying you are wrong, but I disagree with the arguments you are using.

And it doesn't do THAT bad in popularity, being a huge crowd favorite that the band always played for a number of years (and even at the reunion).

Honestly, I love Hallowed as much as anyone else, but it's influence and impact are nowhere near the level of Black Sabbath.
And "musical and lyrical quality" is way too subjective...

War Pigs/Paranoid/Iron Man might be more popular, but Black Sabbath has WAY more influence and impact, and that's why we moved it to #1 for Sabbath on the top 10 songs index.

Well I've given my arguments for metal in general. Two people, at least, agreed with me.

It was the prototype for the whole concept of the metal epic. Just listen to the Saint Vitus song I posted above, it's clearly being modeled after Black Sabbath (and that was recorded in 1995). Not to mention even more popular tunes like Hallowed Be Thy Name, which actually owes quite a bit to Black Sabbath, as dmilled explained earlier in the thread.
It was just the entire wellspring for everything that would come to embody metal in the future.

So does anyone other than Sherick and scarified agree with this overall?

Eh, you're probably right.

However you want to rank them, IMO the top 5 should always be Black Sabbath, Hallowed, Paranoid, Angel Of Death, and Master Of Puppets.

Well, I don't know guys. Not everyone will agree that Paranoid is the greatest from Black Sabbath and there will always be debate what should be the order of 'big 4'.

But if at least 3 of you can 'dig' top 4 for Sabbath and can say it in this topic then I can rearrange top 10 a bit.
