opeth
nevermore
the sword
tyr
iron maiden
black sabbath
blind guardian
candlemass

other bands i like but don't listen to as much:

metallica
agalloch
witchfinder general
witchcraft
ensiferum

I'm not going to give you similar recommendations because expand your horizons...that's why.

Gojira - From Mars to Sirius
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History
Converge - Axe to Fall
Sunn O))) - Black One
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights
Boris - Pink
Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
Gnaw Their Tongues - An Epiphanic Vomiting of Blood
Harvey Milk - Life... The Best Game in Town
Made Out of Babies - Trophy
Neurosis - Given to the Rising
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
Warning - Watching From a Distance

Dude, don't be a prick. He'll expand his horizons when he's damn well ready.

(Seriously though, get Athiest- Unquestionable Presence. That album is the bomb)

Yep, telling him all the albums you like is obviously the enlightening approach.

it's okay joe! i'm like reexpanding my horizons anyways. i just don't know what's good anymore from the last five years or so. i'm trying to remember everything i liked back in the day and reacquire it, as well as what i've been missing.

Excellent taste. Really surprised to see Witchcraft and Witchfinder General in there....killer shit! I've just recently got the Death Penalty album, and I've been playing the shit out of it.

As for other recommendations, I'll give you a few. But what kind of metal do you prefer? Or do you like it equally?
At any rate, I'm gonna try not to go for really obvious choices, so check these bands out:

-Witch (my favorite 'recent' metal band)
-Budgie (contemporaries of early Sabbath)
-Cathedral (very unique style of doom, Forest Of Equilibrium is a brilliant album)
-Electric Wizard
-Saint Vitus (imo the ultimate doom band)
-Ghost
-Sacred Reich (basically they're Metallica clones, but they're so damn good at it)

i don't know how i didn't see your post the first time i check back here. thank you.

i used to be really into doom. i like power metal that isn't super cheesy. i can't really get into thrash for some reason. i like death and black metal if there's something unique or interesting about it, like some melodeath or wintersun. i remember liking dissection a lot. i'll need to reacquire their album. i also liked folk and viking metal a lot, though they overlap with a lot of other genres. then bands that mix styles in general are pretty appealing to me.

You clearly missed when I said "when he's ready." Which wasn't meant to imply it will never happen. Shit I sought out Neurosis when I wanted to expand my horizons. I also agree with Sherick that just pointing out albums you like isn't a very good approach to that. A smarter idea would be to post albums/bands that are a halfway point between what he likes and something completely new.

Jess, if you like The Sword, you should like High On Fire. My personal favorite is Snakes For The Divine, but you can't go wrong with the brand new one, De Vermis Mysteriis, either. Also a remaster of their first album, Art of Self Defense came out last week, and that's as good of a place to start as any. Hell, you can get that one at Best Buy! It's where I got my copy.
