i just saw this and having Superunknown in the 30s and no album by alice in chains is confusing, and all i can think is that it was overlooked .... cause both jar of Flies and Dirt would fit in very nicely in the top 60 and 40 respectively .....

There is something extremely itchy about Kid A beating Disintegration.

There's something wrong with the VU's s/t being ahead of both imo. Seems to me that's just that high because it's a VU album rather than because it's a great alt. album.

I'll be working to update this list next.

EDIT: OK, here's the VERY ROUGH draft of the new list. "Very Rough" meaning all I did was eliminate the albums from artists on the "influences" sub-section of the Artists list, and add new albums at the bottom (#168-#200).

This needs significant work. Anyone got suggestions? Albums that are missing? There's alot of albums in the new section that absolutely should be higher, but how high?

Is the list based on the greatness of the albums within alternative culture, within rock music as a whole or a mix of both? If it's the first I don't think "Nevermind" should be #1. "OK Computer" could move up a little. "Murmur" should move into the Top 10. I don't think "Zen Arcade", "You're Living All Over Me" and MoB's "Vs." need to be quite that high. Some albums in the lower reach that I think should move up are "Post", "Double Nickels on the Dime", "Specials", "Skylarking", "Funeral", "Dummy" and "Dookie".

Mix of both, with influence, acclaim and popularity within alternative culture and from alternative music critics (and i'm including Spin, Allmusic and Robert Christgau as "alternative critics") being more important than Mainstream influence/acclaim/popularity.

Nevermind, Daydream Nation, Murmur and Remain in Light all have good arguments towards them each being #1 on this list.

Where do you think these albums should go? They're all getting into the Top 100, and "Dookie" and "DNotD" are easily in the Top 50, though.

Not sure. They just seemed awfully low. I guess they should be in the Top 100 at least. "Homogenic" could be added as well.

That look better? I moved some stuff up.

Also, I replaced a couple albums. There was no reason for Nick Cave's "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus" to be on the list in place of "Tender Prey", which is far more acclaimed.

I thought that was a given. Also I think you know more about alternative music than I do, so I'll just say it looks great.

Forgot about that one. I put it at #5.

I love 2000's rock music and there's always some kind of bias against the music from that decade. I personally think "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" is a near perfect album and should at least be in the Top100.
