100 Greatest Rock Anthems

Criteria: - A rock anthem is a powerful, celebratory rock song with arena-rock sound often with lyrics celebrating rock music itself and simple sing-a-long choruses, chants, or hooks. These Rock Anthems were chosen for their popularity as a rock anthem, music, lyrics, and originality.

I'd put We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions together at the #1.

Yeah, giving each one a separate slot in the top five seems ridiculously excessive. Not that "ridiculously excessive" doesn't go well with that record.

I won't deny it's overplayed, but having no You Shook Me All Night Long is an instant cred killer. I might actually argue it should be higher than Highway To Hell (which I greatly prefer).

That might as well be the definition of "dinosaur rock".

Not sure why CCR's "Fortunate Son" is here? The lyrics dont celebrate rock at all, it's an anti-war song and it's not even really short or anthemic.

Take another look at the list and tell me how many of these songs celebrate rock. And what does its length have to do with it? It's a short song in my book.

Yes, I don't think length is a consideration, and even if it were, "Fortunate Son" is 2:20, shorter than most of the songs on the list. And being about rock helps, but it's clear that it's not a requirement. The list also seems to make room for lyrics that make a strong, general statement about something. So I think it's fine for "Fortunate Son" to be on the list, but it's the only CCR song on the list, and probably not the first I'd include. I'd say "Travelin' Band" and "Up Around the Bend", and maybe also "Proud Mary", better fit the list's definition of anthem.

The song I don't get being included is "Lick It Up" by KISS, especially at such a high position (#35). I don't think it's especially anthemic, and not especially important either. Look at the songs that immediately follow it.

I think the following songs could all be on the list. I tried to roughly order them based on how important and how anthemic I think they are:

I Get Around – Beach Boys
Say It Loud - I’m Black and I’m Proud – James Brown
Surfin’ U.S.A. – Beach Boys
Back in the U.S.A. – Chuck Berry
Quarter to Three – Gary U.S. Bonds
1999 – Prince
War – Edwin Starr
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
Twistin’ the Night Away – Sam Cooke
Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu – Huey “Piano” Smith & the Clowns
Sheena Is a Punk Rocker – Ramones
Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
Disco Inferno – Trammps
All Around the World – Little Richard
School Day – Chuck Berry
Living in America – James Brown
Rip It Up – Little Richard
Roadrunner – Modern Lovers
I Love Music – O’Jays
Turn the Beat Around – Vicki Sue Robinson
Reelin' and Rockin' - Chuck Berry
Little Queenie - Chuck Berry
Everybody Needs Somebody to Love – Solomon Burke
Wild Night – Van Morrison
We Built This City – Starship
Soul Man – Sam & Dave

Most of Stevie Wonder's singles from 1972-76 are also possibilities. There are 4 Chuck Berry songs above, and 3 already on the list, which would be a lot in all, but Chuck really had a knack for writing anthems.

"Shout" certainly is celebratory. I think's more anthemic than some of what's on the list.
