Elton John's current list needs to be fixed.

1. Candle in the Wind
2. Your Song
3. Tiny Dancer
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
5. Madman Across the Water
6. Daniel
7. Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
8. Rocket Man
9. Levon
10. Crocodile Rock

I would suggest....

1. Candle in the Wind
2. Your Song
3. Rocket Man
4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
5. Bennie and the Jets
6. Tiny Dancer
7. Crocodile Rock
8. Can You Feel the Love Tonight?
9. Daniel
10. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me

Any disagreements?

Yeah, good changes. "Madman Across The Water" is a good song and all, but I can't imagine why it would be in his top ten.

Yes, The Man's list is quite a bit better than the DDD list. On his list, I would probably replace 2 of the last 3 with "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", but he has the same 7 songs in the top 7 that I would have.

Which would you suggest taking out? All three of those last songs were very major hits for him, although I suppose that Philadelphia Freedom and Don't Go Breaking were quite big as well

Right, and it's also the most successful song of the later part of his career. I definitely say it should stay in the top ten. But then that means we would have to remove Daniel and Don't Let the Sun, which I think were more important to his career than either Philadelphia Freedom or Don't Go Breaking My Heart. Although the latter two did better on the charts, the former two had extremely formidable chart performances as well, PLUS they have fared far better in lasting popularity. Both of them remain among his most popular ballads.

That doesn't look particularly right. "Oliver's Army" is a good song, but is it his most influential, acclaimed or popular?

It should be something like:
1. Radio Radio
2. Watching the Detectives
3. (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?
4. Oliver's Army
5. (I Don't Want To) Go to Chelsea
6. Alison
7. Pump it Up
8. I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down
9. Veronica
10. Accidents Will Happen

There probably should be a post-'70s song on the list, and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" is as good a choice as any.

According to the combined results of 9 oldies radio surveys that I found, "Daniel" and "Philadelphia Freedom" have the most lasting popularity of the 4 '70s songs in question, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is next, and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is well behind all of them. That's not the only way to measure lasting popularity, but I don't know a better way. And I don't see how a song that was released in '74 (DLTSGDOM) and wasn't as big a hit as some songs that preceded it was of much importance to his career. If I were to make just one change to your list, it would be to replace "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" with "Philadelphia Freedom". But again, your list is already better that the DDD list.

DLTSGDOM became much bigger in '91, though, when he released it with George Michael. For the same reason that Candle in the Wind is number one on his list (i.e. later incarnations of the song became exponentially bigger than the original had been), Don't Let the Sun should be number ten.

Either or, honestly. Philadelphia Freedom is a good choice too

If you want a 90's song, his biggest hit during the decade ("Candle in the Wind 1997" excluded) seems to be "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" which made #1 as apart of a double A-side with "Candle in the Wind 1997", but later topped several charts in its own right. However, its acclaim and popularity is roughly the same as "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?", which makes either one suitable for that position.

I think the current top five, which is:

1. What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding
2. Pump It Up
3. Alison
4. Oliver's Army
5. Radio Radio

is still right on. "Peace Love & Understanding" is really kind of his signature song. The bottom five of the current list is pretty questionable, though:

6. Beyond Belief
7. Watching the Detectives
8. Accidents Will Happen
9. I Hope You're Happy Now
10. Lipstick Vogue

Based (in part) on your suggestions, how about

6. Watching The Detectives
7. Veronica
8. Accidents Will Happen
9. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
10. I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down

Then again, I'm not sure what's so significant about the Sam & Dave cover at #10. I might be inclined to go with "Less Than Zero" or "Mystery Dance" or something.

As for the Elton list, I do think that "Don't Let The Sun..." should be there based in part of the popularity of the duet version. I don't think "Something About The Way..." was ever a big hit in its own right; I think it just benefited on the charts from the sales of "Candle In The Wind 1997". I rarely hear it on the radio, while "Can You Feel..." still gets played quite a bit.
