There wasn't much thought put into the song order.

Just realized the album version of 'The End' has a huge string of Morrison going 'fuck me babe, fuck yeah' for a good minute or so, unless I'm miss hearing but I'm pretty sure I"m not.

And yeah the song order in this list was always kinda dumb. Then again a greatest songs list is probably the most impossible list to order here, probably harder than artists.

As opposed to what other version?

All there is is an album version.

no you're not miss hearing it, he definitely does, its on the "full version" or album version. apparently morrison was on an acid trip when they first tried to record this song. he kept singing "fuck the mother, kill the father" rather than the actual lyrics. this is supposedly the last song Morrison heard. the night he died, he was playing old doors albums, ending with this one. this was the last song on that album.this was recorded with the lights off and only one candle burning next to Morrison.
bruce there are single versions of the song which are significantly shorter, the full version is around 11.47, the shorter versions are anywhere between 3.50 and 6.30.

There's an Apocalypse Now soundtrack version that has a notably different mix.

That was edited out until the remastered CD version of the album came out in '99 (I think). Until then, I believe all those "fuck's" at the end were edited out.
It was DEFINITELY edited when first released in early '67.

All those "fuck"s are way up in the mix in the Apocalypse Now version.

I really wish we'd work on this list at some point. The one on the site really is horrible in many ways.

We had begun working on a revision a while back, hadn't we? You could repost it and see what happens.

I agree, DDD website deserves a decent list. Maybe create a top 500 would be a good idea.

Well, I put Dock of the Bay at #20. Nothing really sticks out to me except that The Message seems too high.
