The way you have "rock" in all caps and bold seems to imply that you don't think that Stevie Wonder is rock. But that would be insane. I understand that some people limit "rock" to the definition used by album rock/classic rock radio, but those stations have always played Stevie Wonder's 70s classics, so even under that definition he fits. (And obviously that limited definition is not what we use here.)

I initially suspected he considered "rock music" to simply be music be "white artists with guitars" like many people worldwide incorrectly assume, but then he says nothing about James Brown and Marvin Gaye being high on the list. I don't understand how either is any more "rock" than Stevie Wonder is. Perhaps he only knows Wonder from his past-his-prime days ("I Just Called to Say I Love You") and not from the five great funk/soul/rock records he released between 1972 and 1976.

iniquitous, What you consider rock music isn't exactly what this site or many others like it consider rock music. Rock music includes rhythm & blues and genres influenced by it.

Why don't you give a detailed explanation about WHY you don't think so-and-so is or isn't rock? All I've seen you do so far is talk shit about the lists, without ever adding any substance to your arguments. Your posts do nothing to alter the lists, or even alter the way people think about the lists, because you're not saying anything new. None of your posts offer thought-provoking ideas or suggestions, they're just rants.

Zeppelin was gigantic, but only with a certain segment of listeners. Many fans of 1970s music are only familiar with a couple of their American hit singles (they had no singles in the UK). Other than white teenagers and very young adults you wouldn't have found many other Zep fans in the 70s. Stevie on the other hand crossed many more types of listeners, old and young, black, white, Hispanic, etc....although I might rank Elton John ahead of both of them. He had the much wider appeal than Led Zep and probably Wonder too many more hit singles than Zep, and almost as big with albums. Probably more cultural impact than either Zep or Wonder.

First off, Clash is of course right that you are not in charge of the list. I just assumed that when you said "I will put" them at #1 that he was in charge. Sorry about that. Did you mean "I would put..."?

It's certainly close, but I would give Wonder the nod because he had broader appeal. Zep was only played a great deal on album rock stations and mostly was limited to that audience, while Wonder was popular with rock, pop, and R&B audiences and was successful in more parts of the world. I'm not sure if acclaim is supposed to figure into the criteria anywhere, but if so that would put Wonder further into the lead.
