Not at all. McCartney and Wings released much more material than John Lennon in the seventies, and they were also more commercial for the most part.

Over Led Zeppelin for the seventies, yes. But Zeppelin isn't far behind in popularity, and probably ahead in musical impact by about as much as Elton is in popularity. Influence, however, goes heavily to Led Zeppelin, probably by even more than Elton wins cultural impact. Sound right?

James Brown and Queen aren't in the top twenty at all. Neither are David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, etc.

how are you allowing chart success to be equal to popularity....granted Elton had a lot of hit singles, but the most his albums sold in the USA was 7X platinum , which was GYBR , while Zeppelin to my knowledge have 3 Diamond albums in the 70s.....Elton released a lot more albums and a TON more singles, what Zeppelin did with just a few albums is far more impressive IMO.....

Also , Im surprised to see Bowie as low as 13 here....

I also think Queen should be switched with The Who....

How do you suggest measuring popularity then? Chart success and album sales reflect popularity and that's what we've been using.

Maybe that's why it's called "Commercial Impact" instead of popularity.

According to the RIAA, perhaps, but RIAA certifications are problematic. Much of that data is incomplete and the RIAA doesn't even bother with certifications unless a record label asks for it. The charts are a much more complete set of data, so that's what we use. By that data, Elton John and Led Zeppelin are very close in albums for the seventies, while Elton John trounces Led Zeppelin on the singles chart.
