My parents are probably a bit younger than yours (i.e. college age during the early '70s) and they certainly heard of Zeppelin. My mom never cared for them, but recently when hearing one of their slower songs on the radio, she said that they were actually weren't bad musically, even if they weren't her cup of tea. She loves The Who, though. My dad liked Led Zeppelin, but not well enough to buy any of their albums.

Question. Would it be accurate to say that Zeppelin's singles that were released (all of them, both the '60s and '70s and '80s ones) were massive, #1-type hits generally? (I know a lot of Zep fans on the old Zep/Who thread were pushing this idea). I have no horse in this race, btw.

No. "Whole Lotta Love" was their only top 10 entry in the US, peaking at #4 and going Gold. After that they have five more top 40 hits.

Additionally, they didn't release singles in the UK during their career. Their only two top 40 entries in that country ("Whole Lotta Love" #21 and "Stairway to Heaven" #37) are from a special single in the mid-90s and the result of an internet download campaign, respectively.

... generally Zeppelin singles that were released outside of the US did very well. Whole Lotta Love was #1 in a number of countries (Australia, Germany etc) #2 in Canada, #5 Switzerland and pretty well Top 10 everywhere else that had charts around the world (for example #6 in South Africa). Their remaining singles released in the 70`s were also hits in those same markets (one example the Immigrant Song was #7 in South Africa, #4 in Switzerland etc).... Take care

My parents went to college in the 70s and both were definitely familiar with Led Zeppelin, as were just about everyone they knew. As for Stevie Wonder, kind of an unfair comparison as they and he were both born and raised in Michigan at about the same time, and my parents grew up in a town about 30-45 minutes away from where Wonder was born. Everybody definitely knew him.

Just to clarify in case that gets viewed out of context, those is ClashWho's words. My parents definitely know who Zeppelin are. They also knew who Stevie is and own three of his albums.

No, US Singles + US Albums + UK Singles > US Albums + UK Albums
